Are there any movie lovers here? I mean people who watch a lot of movies, not just the new ones. If so, what are your favorite movies?
i like watching old science fiction movies, most of them are just funny but there are some actual good ones.
If there's nothing on...I'd watch a movie. Yeah... 8)
My favorites are Fight Club, Snatch, Kevin Smith's movies, Star Wars, Matrix (only the first one). I can't think of more.
Favorite old movie?
Definately Dragonheart and some other ones that I can't remember at the moment :D
If I watch one a month it's a lot, so no: I'm not a movie lover.
I love movies, my favourite series is Die Hard.
Quote from: Harvest on May 04, 2008, 04:57:20 PMI love movies, my favourite series is Die Hard.

Well I watch tons. I go to Blockbuster and Hollywood a few times a week.

i agree.
Yeah...thanks for that double post...
I think #4 was just as good as #1, #3 was the worst though.
Has anyone seen August Rush?
I LOVE that movie.
My two above-all-else favorite movies are The Prestige and Dragonheart (the first one, the second one sucked...)
I saw Dragonheart on the Sci-fi channel the other day.
I am not a movie lover, but here are my favs
The Princess Bride
Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
Gladiator
LotR(Lord of the Rings, although I have read the books too)
Fiddler on the Roof
and Equalibrium
(and if that is a long list, I only ever watch movies I know are exceptional)
Couple...interesting...choices on there....
Star Wars (All of them.. although IV is my favorite)
I'm a BIIIIG Movie lover! My favorites (at the moment) would have to be...
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Last Samurai
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Phantom of the Opera
Saints and Soldiers
The Fugitive
The Bourne Trilogy
Patriot Games
You've Got Mail (Yes, I know that's kind of odd)
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
My Neighbor Totoro
Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Pinnochio (The OLD Disney cartoon)
The Lion King
The Original Star Wars Trilogy
The Patriot
And the list goes on and on and on and on. I watch at least one movie a week. Sometimes more......Netflix......
Favorite movies? well, where should I begin.
My favorite movies are:
LoTR Trilogy
The Dark Knight
No Country For Old Men
Kelly's Heros(My favorite Clint Eastwood movie)
Original Star Wars Trilogy
Jet Li's Fearless
Way of the Dragon
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Meaning of Life
The Patriot
Halloween(Original)
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
There's probably more but these are what I can think of. My favorite recent movie is definatly No County for Old Men. Better than the Dark Knight.
I absolutely love the movie School of Rock. The whole idea of it is awesome. And I know a lot of you probably don't like Jack Black, but you have to admit he was hilarious in that movie.
He did a good job, not my style of movie though
I like Jack Black. Some of his movies are great, others... not so much.
He makes a great voice-over actor too. I know it's a kid's movie, but did anyone see Kung Foo Panda?
Right here
nope, and I dont plan to any time soon though his voice acting of Lenny in Shark Tale was great.
Kung Foo Panda was actually a lot better than I expected. It's worth seeing once. The first time I saw Shark Tale, I couldn't believe it was really him. It's painfull to talk up that high.
But definatly worth it. Unless you're in the real world. :P
I WATCHED THE MATRIX RELOADED IN SPANISH THE OTHER NIGHT AND IT WAS AMAZING, IF THAT COUNTS
jimbob is a noob. And he owns a mexican.

Pan's Labyrinth good, except its only in spanish...
That doesn't take away from its beastyness.
nightmare on elm street 1 and 3 blew me away, i thought that was the most clever horror movie, that and silence of the lambs. i recently got into the whole horror deal lol
If you like horror, try Halloween. The original 1979 version. Not the new crappy Rob Zombie version.
I've been watching a bunch of old Bond films. Got through The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, For Your Eyes Only, and Goldeneye. Also finally seeing Batman Begins cause I never did.
Quote from: KefkaticFanatic on September 23, 2009, 04:39:09 PMAlso finally seeing Batman Begins cause I never did.
Good movie. So was the sequel.
Agreed. It starts a bit slow, but ends up still being pretty enjoyable.
I like how it takes the comical-ness out of batman. No over complicated plots filled with obvious flaws made by goofy super villains that don't look nearly as goofy as Adam West in tights.
Yes, but nothing is more entertaining than the Jack Nicholson Joker.
Nope. And I'm pretty sure there's a reference to Watchmen in the movie."You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs." I think that was it. But just be sure never to rub another mans rhubarb.Heheheh.
Anyone seen Zombieland or Men Who Stare At Goats. They both look amazing but I can't decide which one I should see.
Zombieland was awesome, the other film has an average 5.9/10. Should be an easy decision.
Another good looking movie is Pirate Radio.
The Shawshank Redemption was an amazing movie. If you haven't seen it, you should.
Quote from: SuperFireKirby on November 08, 2009, 10:26:19 AMAnyone seen Zombieland or Men Who Stare At Goats. They both look amazing but I can't decide which one I should see.
Zombieland.
I've seen both, Men Who Stare At Goats may have been ruined because it just came out when I saw it yet it was put in the small theatre (my town sucks, so good movies sometimes go in a tiny theatre that isn't worth paying for)
The Book of Eli looks pretty awesome too. I thinks I'll go see it tomorrow.
Robin Hood, Inception, that vampire one, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief looks pretty average, but I still might see it, and Clash of the Titans.
The cliche title award goes to the last one.
They all look pretty good from the trailers. And of course the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, but that doesn't really count as it's anime. And I doubt it will be released in UK, US, AU any time soon.
Robin Hood looks epic. If its anything like Gladiator, then I'll have to see it in theatres and buy it.
don't you guys think like hollywoodised films are all the same... like avatar, it was freaking epic but a little bit too cliche... still freaking pwns a lot of other stuff... aparantly the original idea the guy came up with was way awesomer, but oh well >_>
the lovely bones was cool, depressing... but cool >_>
donnie darko was pretty cool too, and v for vendetta lol guy fawks guy was awesome
and haha die hard was epic
also the nightmare on elm street series, pretty epic things in there, like this one guy got sucked into a bed and then a massive geiser of blood spurted forth and then gravity screwed up so all of it stuck to the roof.
favourite movie though could probably be Pan's Labyrinth. I love that freaking movie, it's so cool.
alice in wonderland seems like it's going to be cool I mean with that psycho Johnny Depp <_>
Pan's Labyrinth was epic. So was V for Vendetta. Almost as good as the novel.
V for Vendetta is amazing.
as is Donnie Darko, thanks for mentioning that one Qew!
I love watching movies. District 9 is next in the queue, then the Hurt Locker.
Suggestions?
District 9 again, plus an extra helping of District 9. And maybe after that some moar District 9.
And then for a grand finale, top if off with the halo movie that district 9 was made to replace on short notice. ::)

Has anyone of you seen the film "Deep Impact"? This film is amazing, I recommend it.
That's the one with the meteor heading for Earth, and everyone has to escape to high ground, i.e., the mountains? Loved that movie too. :D
Just saw Watchmen. Pretty disappointed with it after the comic was so amazing.
D:
really? I thought Watchmen was amazing. Though, it might be because I never read the comic.
They changed the entire ending of it.
They changed the entire ending of V for Vendetta too and that was still good.
(Though not as good as the original, granted).
Why does it seem like no one can keep a movie based on an Alan Moore comic accurate?
Hannibal Marathon tonight..
too bad we couldn't get a copy of Hannibal rising in time.
Comments on Hurt Locker?
Absolutely fantastic.
I haven't seen it myself, but from the people that have told me about it, you either love it or hate it. No one I've talked to has been in the between.
Well I don't love it, but I think technically, in terms of acting and character development and plot and the whole gambit, it's a great movie.
However, it feels slow and campy for the casual watcher. While I try to look past things like pacing in my movies, it could have used a bit more energy at points.
I loathed it.
Go home

I just realized how badly I interpreted what you said. ;D But you can't blame me, I only got two hours of sleep last night.
Hurt Locker is such an average movie. How fail is the academy to give it anything.

But this time they're right! And yeah. I hate Transformers.
A friend of mine who has good taste told me that Iron Man 2 is better than the first one.
Iron Man 2 was pretty good, but not as good as the first one.
Its was pretty good for an action flick. At least it had a plot. *stares at Transformers 2
I personally liked the first one better though. Still a good movie though.
Iron Man 2 was fairly good. Not as good as the first of course, but good.
Man, I'm behind on the times. Haven't seen any Iron Man movies or Transformer films, and I have no desire to watch Kick Ass. So many movies that don't seem that interesting which I wouldn't want to shell out money for. Even to rent. I watch tons of movies on Netflix Wii and On Demand, though.
But let me tell you how awesome the My Little Pony movie was...
...Netflix Wii!?
Lol, Netflix on the Wii.
Quote from: Fox IV on May 09, 2010, 07:54:59 PMI have no desire to watch Kick Ass
You should definitely fix this.
Yeah, if you have Netflix, internet connection and the Wii, you can get a disk that you put in the Wii and can watch movies any time you want. Granted, the movies generally aren't that fantastic, but I did find all the episodes of the X Files on it. :P
And Sir Awesomesauce, I won't say I'll never watch it, but it'll probably be no time in the near future. :P
No, I mean actually wasting your time streaming from the Wii. You'll get significantly better quality on your PC. It's more worth it to wait for the damn DVDs to arrive.
*blinks*
It looks just like other programs on my television. It's not the Wii-quality graphics if that's what you're saying.
...
Well, if you have a shitty TV then sure, but the max it can do is what, 480p? Everything else can give you 1080p streaming (and with 5.1 surround soon).
720p at best I'd say. The wii isn't total garbage. I would hope it could at least do better than Youtube.
It can't. Youtube can do 1080p. And in terms of video quality, yes. It is.
Reall? I've never seen a video on there that can do 1080p. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough.

Dude, I was just going to! That is my ALL-TIME favorite movie! In sixth grade, the first thing I would do EVERY day when I got home was watch the Nightmare Before Christmas!
As a result of this obsession, I now have it memorized, songs and all; I can play all the songs on the piano; and... Well, the list goes on and on.
I don't know if you wanted me to rave about it or, if you haven't seen it, recommend it, so I'll just do both.
That movie is pretty epic. I would recommend it if you like artistic and strange movies. And if you can put up with amazing songs by Danny Elfman. Many *cough* narrow-minded *cough* people say it sucks and it's the most boring movie they've ever seen. It's not.
Sorry if this reply is too late (or too long). XD
Now I really want to watch it. :D Thank for the review. ^_^ And artistic and strange...it's Tim Burton. :P Of course I'll love it. :D
Nightmare on Elm Street was not great.
Of coarse it wasn't. Horror classics always suck when they're remade. (Halloween, Friday the 13th, the Omen, Last House on the Left, and now this)
I've never been a fan of horror movies in general. There's nothing about them that's...well...good. :S
Old ones are awesome. Any horror movie past 2000 usually sucks. Hmmm.... well 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later were actually really good. But Ican't think of any other good horror movies made in the last ten years.
Completely different genre here, not to mention topic, but have any of y'all seen Shrek Forever After? Was thinking about seeing it. Is it any good? ???
Critics are saying it's way better than the third one. Which is good.
Quote from: SuperFireKirby on May 29, 2010, 10:37:32 AMCritics are saying it's way better than the third one. Which is good.
I agree. I love the first one. The second one was less good, but still funny. The third one sucked, period.
They also say it's bad. It's not hard to be better than the third.
Whatever the reviewers say, it's never going to be better than the 1st. As Kefka said, it's not hard to be better than the 3rd. At least we know it will be (somewhat) enjoyable.
I wish they wouldn't milk terrible franchises.
UPDATE: The movie was actually very good. I especially enjoyed Walt Dohrn as Rumpelstiltskin.
Good soundtrack, too. Of course, y'all probably don't listen to movie score as much as I do... :P
But, yeah, I'd recommend it... if you don't mind the 3d glasses. xD
I'm never watching a 3D movie in a regular cinema again. Everything is discoloured (darkened), the glasses are a bit of a nuisance, and they really don't do much in the way of depth. However, up at IMAX; when the screen is so big you don't notice the edges of the screen. Makes for much better depth.
Kinda old movie, but I didn't really like the 2nd Transformers movie.
If they make a third one, I want Primus and Unicron.
FTW
I didn't like any of the Transformers movies that much.
I like movies that are ENJOYABLE, honestly.

I recently dug out my VHS (Yes, VHS) of the original, and loved it. I bought it when it came out on DVD in March.
I also got the piano book (favorite song March of the Cards).
American History X - one of the best movies I've ever seen.

American History X , what a classic, I remember watching that as a teen. Had a lot of impact.
Just re-watched Howl's Moving Castle. For the billionth time. Such a good song...
But the book is like eighteen times better. Although it's completely different...

That was my favorite movie when I was younger. Probably still my favorite childhood movie.
The book exceeds it by a long shot... still, a really good movie.
Jack Skellington has a cameo as the underwater pirate lol.
Has anyone seen The Last Airbender? It got a 9% from Rotten Tomatoes, an F from St. Petersburg Times and many, many terrible reviews. But is it really that terrible? Considering M. Night Shamalalalalalan wrote the screen play and directeds it, probably. I'm guess Paramount is keeping him tied up in the trunk of a car somewhere for this disaster.
I just watched about ten minutes of it and I was too pissed off to watch any further. Worst movie I've possibly ever attepted to watch.
no but my brother and I like the cartoon... and judging by your avatar so do you.

I thought it was a really good movie, surprisingly - I didn't expect it to be that great.
It's not often that I leave a movie theater feeling wholly satisfied, but this film did the trick for me.
I really wanna see Dinner For Schmucks... anyone see it yet?
Heard it was really good! Haven't seen it yet though. Steve Carell is pretty funny.
The Other Guys also looked pretty good.
Yep. I still have to see Get Him to the Greek, Killers and Grown Ups... theyre on my list!
I think I may watch Get Smart and Meet the Parents today... both GREAT movies (the second better than the first)
Meet the Parents is epic! Meet the Fockers was also good! And this winter, guess what's coming out - Little Fockers. xD 'Twill be funny.
Grownups wasn't that good, BTW.
alright then... i cant wait to see Little Fockers... ive seen a trailer for it, its gonna be REALLY funny!
Maybe ill watch something with seth rogen in it... knocked up or zach and miri!

And I second that!
I think I may watch the Old School today... now THAT was a pretty funny movie!
They're releasing another Nanny McPhee movie... It's coming out Friday in the U.S., called "Nanny McPhee Returns" (it was already released in other parts of the world as "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang")
I loved the first one, but to make a sequel? I hope they don't take what is already great and ruin it, as so many other sequels did.
Scott Pilgrim was awesome and everyone here should see it because you'll likely all appreciate it.
I liked the books better.
Has anyone seen Vampires Suck? Was it good?
My guess is it's going to be like Epic Movie, Super hero movie, and meet the spartans. In other words, it will suck. Big time.
That was my initial reaction and everything, but I just loathe Twilight so much, that... just maybe it may be soooo bad, it is good... that type of situation

No. Do not support this type of film.
im still not going to see as originally intended.... im making my budget for the fall, so i cant really spend more then I have already for my summer budget... and I just wanted to see what everyone thought...
For the Record: THe LAST movie I saw in theaters was Alice in Wonderland, and I didn't even pay for the ticket, it was a friend's birthday
Quote from: Oni-Link on August 18, 2010, 09:51:34 PMI liked the books better.
I had actually never heard of them. And obviously, there is not a book/comic/etc film in existence that people can legitimately like more than the original material it is based off of.
Case in point: Howl's Moving Castle. An amazing movie, and my favorite book ever, but they are nothing alike. At ALL. The two don't even quite meet up for the ending. But they're still both really, really good.
How does this relate? The book is better, obviously. ::)

Opinions vary, KefkaticFanatic.
LOL
Rotten Tomatoes gave Vampires Suck a 3%
The consensus: Witlessly broad and utterly devoid of laughs, Vampires Suck represents a slight step forward for the Friedberg-Seltzer team.
The page on RT can be found here: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/vampires_suck/
Wow, even worse than the last airbender... haha
So Vampires really do suck... haha
I think I may watch 9 tonight... it was a really original movie that I kinda liked a bit... it felt a little like after a huge war after the events in 1984.
I never saw 9, even though I'm a Tim Burton fanatic! :o
I really should watch that sometime!

Give me an example of a film that has taken the source material and made it better.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Seriously.
The book was much better than that, actually. And so was the Tim Burton remake in 2005.
Roald Dahl was a genius... and the '71 film makes his book seem too happy.

The film version of 1984 that came out in 1984.
oh wait...
Scott Pilgrim was awe-Oh wait. It's a given.
Seen Inception twice. Made so much more sense the second time around.
I'm eagerly awaiting the last two Harry Potter movies.

9 is an amazing, completely under-rated movie.
If I had one complaint about it, it would be that it was too short. 1 hour 19 minutes. I wish something so awesome would be awesome for even longer.

Augh. I watched that on the plane ride to Japan. Most awkward thing ever. So much DONOTWANT oldguynoodz. And random nude/sex scenes. Like, more than was necessary.
Yeah, it was really terrible, didn't even finish it.
Quote from: SlowPokemon on August 21, 2010, 12:51:10 PMThe book was much better than that, actually.
Not really.
Oh, and Matilda was an excellent movie too. Much better than the book imo.
Matilda was an excellent movie... Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood were portrayed most excellently by Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman.
YES! I need to find that movie somewhere

I saw the movie City of ember when it came out with some friends. It was pretty awesome, kinda generic in parts but still pretty awesome.
Then I read the original book. It's exactly the same (almost word for word) but missing half of the scenes and is considerably less cool.
so there, it took the book, copied it out exactly then threw in a couple epic scenes, making it better.
Well I just finished reading The Time Machine and went ahead and bought the 2002 film, it was cheap...and I remember liking it when it came out..but I was much younger then..
we shall see..

:| I have never heard of either.
Anyway, my point is that the majority of the time, the source material is so beloved by its fans that an adaptation will somehow just not live up to their standards.
But apparently when the source material sucks then you can make a good adaptation?
The Lord of the Rings movie was well near the original. But the movie was still not as good, especially considering that Tom Bombadil didn't make the cut in the first one.

You have a good point there, my friend. We can't exactly call it bad when we've loved the source most of our lives. Just because a director's vision was different than we had expected doesn't mean we have to shoot it down... in some cases it does, though.
And for the record, City of Ember the book was way better than the movie. xP
Hold on. I'm contradicting myself. o_o
Isn't Disney Pixar's Up a great movie? Such a great soundtrack, too. Married Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93jxkqG0gWc) is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard from a Disney movie.

Quote from: SuperFireKirby on August 10, 2010, 06:07:34 AMMeh... it would have been better without Ben Stiller.
I just watched much of Meet the Parents, and it's the funniest movie I've ever seen. Murphy's Law movies are usually funny. xD (I didn't watch all of it because it was on DVR, and the TV happened to be messing up when we recorded it).
Truthfully, every time I see Ben Stiller, I think he's hilarious. :P That's just me, though...everyone has opinions.
I really want to see Little Fockers... I may actually go to the theater to see it! (that is something I dont usually do)!
I need to rent the first two, since my DVR really did mess up!
That whole dinner scene towards the beginning is hilarious!
"Is that another one of your secret cameras, Jack? Huh? Booga booga booga! Heh heh heh."
"Greg, that's an urn holding the remains of Jack's mother."
ROFLMAO
It is pretty hilarious! I actually might watch it again tonight... or I might WRITE for once
Meet the Fockers is pretty funny, too!
Aren't the Airplane movies hilarious? :D :D :D :D :D
You should really watch them if you haven't already.
I only like the first one... the sequel was kinda funny, but it WAS HORRIBLE!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIKFpCVXJ-w&feature=related
I just love the part from 2:50 to 3:55.
I remember that movie... I thought it was better than the Alice in Wonderland (2010) movie, since the new one combines bits from the Looking Glass and all
The one from '51 does too. Tweedledum and Tweedledee weren't in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at all. They didn't appear until a short chapter of Through the Looking Glass. Yet they're included in all the film versions. xD
I forgot Tweedledum and Tweedledee were in the first movie
But there was no jabberwocky in the cartoon version. (that is one creepy poem, too)
There was no Jabberwocky, but the Cheshire Cat (Sterling Holloway) sings a song called 'Twas Brillig, that is basically the first two verses of the poem.
... and this is why certain books should not be made into movies!!!
(I did my senior report on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in a group for AP Lang)
I want to see the Social Network (has anyone "scene" it and liked it?)
Yes, saw it last night. It's a very good film.
Watched Beetlejuice again, was on cartoon network (wtf?).
I always thought the ending scene with Beetlejuice in the waiting room was hilarious, when he has like number 9 trillion, and it says "Now Serving 3"
Also the scene where they dance around the table... rofl
That movie creeps me out to no end. I've tried watching it, but I can't really get into it.
It's a weird sort of movie, you kind of have to be a certain type of person to like it.
My cousin who is now... thirty, I believe said she went to see it in the movie theater and was scared to no end, same with my mom. LOL
And I like your avatar, Dude! I have never seen you with an avatar!
...he's had that one for a while
Yeah, but it's been months since I've had any avatar.
So Im gonna see the Social Network on tuesday...
But my neighbors are watching Open Season tonight... was it a good movie (its that cartoon one)
It was meh.
So, how many of you were freaked out by Large Marge as a kid (from Pee Wee's Big Adventure)?
Watched meet the parents and meet the fockers. So freakin' hilarious.
AGAIN??? That's kinda a little overkill... I give a month separation from watching movies again...
I do need to watch You, Me and Dupree again.... such a funny movie! and Old School, too!
If you recall, I said last time that I only watched like an hour of Meet the Parents, and that I wanted to watch the second one as well as the rest of the first one.

I've made a turn and now im watching Harry Potter Movies (1 month and 1 day until Deathly Hollows Pt 1!!!)
I hope to see it at the IMAX rather than a regular theater... that screen is freakin' HUGE.
THE IMAX IS A LIE. I went to see Christmas Caroll in IMAX last year. Waste of extra money. The screen is only slightly larger. Unless,of course, you plan to see it in a full blown, gigantic IMAX theater.
That's like the one right near my house at the Mall of Georgia, where I saw Alice in Wonderland in March. Believe me, this one is by no means a rip off. :)
So it's not the rip off IMAX theatre you'll find at your local AMC? That's good. We've one of those amazingly huge dome theatres at a local science museum. Saw a documentary on the Titanic in it while on a field trip when I was in 5th grade.
That's called OMNIMAX. It's different. We have one in the science museum downtown too. Fucking crazy. But they rarely show anything besides science films.
Going to see Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I'll let anyone who's interested and hasn't seen it know how it was. :P
That was my favorite of the Narnia books, so I hope they don't mess it up.
I kinda lost interest in the movies after the first one, which I thought was pretty descent. Loved the books as a kid though, still do.
It was very interesting. It followed the books and it didn't, you know. The last scene's music gave me goosebumps.

Ditto. Though they aren't bad. I'd love a space one though.
Megamind; what do you guys think? I've heard it's really good.
Pretty awful--it was a rehash of several other dreamworks films with not much pizazz.
I still love the Bee Movie, though.
The only thing that I enjoyed in Bee Movie was when Sting was brought into the court. Everything else was a total meh.
This morning, since she asked if I wanted to come, I went to the movies with my mother, brother, and sister. I walked into the movie theater of "Tangled" and saw (not very promisingly) a lot of little kids. I was pretty sure it would be an overwhelming "meh" with an annoyingly predictable plot.
I was very pleasantly surprised. It was actually a very good and cleverly thought-out movie, though you would never be able to guess from the previews. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who still has it playing in his or her local theater.
Don't really watch a lot of movies, what do you guys think I should watch? Also, no movies still running in theaters unless I can watch them online. French versions of movie usually are horrible.
Depends on what kind of movies you like.
Fantasy: LotR Trilogy
Horror: 28 Weeks Later(probably the best horror movie of the decade. Most horror movies suck these days.)
Sci-Fi: Star Wars [/thank you Cpt. Obvious]
Comedy: Either Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein. Two of the best comedies ever.
Black(Dark) Comedy: The Lady Killers or Inglorious Basterds
Old Movies: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are probably my two favorite movies from the 1930's. Along with the Flash Gordon movies.
Donnie Darko's fantastic.

While it's certainly not Miyazaki's best film, and doesn't have an amazing storyline, it's fantastically animated, with some parts that will definitely make you raise your eyebrows and say, "Oooh, that's cool..."
It introduces some very strange ideas, and is not completely "fully-fleshed-out", but definitely worth at least renting.
Ponyo was great. One of his weirdest, I think. ^_^
Oh, the subtitles I had were hilarious. "That strange agricultural chemicals man is following us!"

In many movies, there are a pair of "bad guys" that are either stupid or don't really do much or doesn't help at all or sometimes helps the "good guys." It's called comic relief. Take for example - Jessie and James for Pokemon, Ragetti and Pintel for Pirates of the Caribbean, and what you said - Iggy and Spike for Super mario bros.

That's the worst thing about it. :P I didn't care for Sosuke's voice actor either. Liam Neeson and Betty White were great though. I enjoyed the slightly operatic number towards the beginning, "Mother Sea", and I'm glad they kept it in Japanese.

I've been watching the disney movies of my youth for what I missed when I was a kid... looking at dialogue rather than songs and pictures.
So last week I actually got around to watching the latest Pirates of the Carribean movie and I was pleasantly surprised.
Granted, about 75% of the plot didn't make a lick of sense, but I was having too much fun to care. My only real complaints besides that are that the obligatory romantic sub-plot was sappy and forced between two of the flattest named characters in the film, and Blackbeard really doesn't live up to his fearsome reputation.
But other than that, it was worth eight bucks to see (not in 3D, 3D sucks as always, but the regular screening is good).

^thank you, that movie was not as awful as most make it out to be
Quote from: SlowPokemon on June 30, 2011, 12:55:27 PM^thank you, that movie was not as awful as most make it out to be
It still fell victim to a lot of the pitfalls of the previous two movies, what I named in the above post, but the major difference is that while it was over two hours long, it didn't really feel like it this time.
Dead Man's Chest and At World's End just really started to drag after a bit, but the pacing in this movie was MUCH improved.
So I'm DVRing Inception; it's on tomorrow afternoon. Looking forward to watching it.
*PREPARES FOR EPIC LETDOWN POST*

I really liked Inception :D Hopefully you will too.
It's quite a good film, it's just that since there are rarely really *good* films anymore people freaked out and thought it was the best thing ever, hence the overrated stigma it has with some groups.

This. So much.
I don't mind watching a movie only for the special effects and explosions, but i also love to think and try to understand what's happening in a movie that actually have a storyline (i.e. Inception)
Watch any movie from the 1930's and 40's and you'll never find modern movies adequate again.
Some of my favorites:
Citizen Kane,
The Hunchback of Notre Dame,
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,
Mr. Deeds Goes To Town,
It Happened One Night,
Random Harvest,
Make Way For Tomorrow
I enjoyed it immensely. Not as huge of a mindfuck as everyone made it out to be but still very interesting. There were some amazing scenes in there, but I won't post spoilers as to which ones I liked best.
Great. 8.75/10

Yeah, I honestly understood the film the first time around :B I didn't have to "watch it twice" or whatever else people said.
It really is good, the problem is all these derpy old-film elitists that seem to have this idea that because there are lots of bad films now every film is bad and can never be as good as the GOOD OL CLASSICS.
There are still amazing movies being put out now a days but there's so few of them compared to all the shit that gets shoveled into the movie theatres that it's easy to forget sometimes.
Just saw MASH for the first time. An amazing comedy aboot the Korean War. Definitely watch it if you ever get the opportunity.
Best movie to date? Dark Knight or Inception
Best series to date? HP
Worst movie ever? THE ROOM!
Quote from: Lildigipoke2 on August 27, 2011, 07:27:02 AMBest movie to date? Dark Knight or Inception
You kiddning me? There are LEGIONS of better movies than either of these. Personally, I think the Dark Knight would have been insanely dull if not for Heath Ledger's beautiful performance. They're both good, no doubt, but there are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO many better movies.
I completely agree with SFK, the dark knight was only meh and it was only that good because of heath ledger. All the other actors had alright~bad performances. And Inception is not the best movie ever. :P I could agree with HP but they're based on books... nah don't really agree with your choices.
I just watched How To Train Your Dragon... absolutely adorable! I loved it.
^The score from that movie is simply amazing

I just got through watching Ladder 49. GREAT movie. I would highly recommend it to someone, that is, if you don't mind getting a little tear-y eyed.
I somehow stumbled upon this one amazingly dark movie. It's called Confessions, it's a foreign language film that came out last year but it won so many awards. Here's the wikipedia page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confessions_%28film%29 Plot summary has spoilers though.
It's based on a book so of course it's great, but I can't find the book anywhere whereas the film should be easier to find. If you like that kind of dark psychological drama I'd reccomend it.
I'll have to try and find it.
My two favourite foreign films are definitely Pan's Labyrinth and Waltz With Bashir.
Waltz With Bashir was AMAZING.

I agree. Another movie with an amazing score is
Up.
^I agree, Married Life especially is overplayed but still really good. I like Giacchino's score to Ratatouille better than his score to Up though.
Ugh Married Life got stuck in my head for like two weeks straight.
It sounded nice but it's one of those songs that play over and over and over and over again while in your head.

Also I did get your email. It went to my spam folder. I keep forgetting to tell you.
UP was definitely a great movie - and oh, the beginning. ;_; My creys.
Wall-E was fantastic too. I cried at the end, no big deal 9_9;

Hahaha. Probably cause it was from Microsoft.
I put the files on my SkyDrive instead of Mediafire. Just lemme know if you CANT get them, then I'll move 'em over.
So today I watched Edward Scissorhands for the first time, as I am a Burton lover yet somehow have never seen it.
...amazing. I really liked it. Not my favorite of his but excellent score by Elfman and really good all around. Very different movie.
^There's a few good songs in there.
I have a nice collection of songs from amazing and older movies, like Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, The Magnificent Seven as well as the newer stuff like The English Patient, some original HP stuff, LotR, The Queen and some newer James Bond

Yah it was kind of...disturbing but I liked it. Kind of reminded me just of being a social outcast. I remember what that felt like. I must say, I kind of felt a sick pleasure at the end when he killed the girl's jock boyfriend. Also I loved where he sees them together and feels the bitter, jealous hatred, and drags his hands against the wall, etc.
He was very...creepy looking though.
I watched The Shawshank Redemption for the first time last week. Very very good movie. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors.

Did anyone see The Avengers, and care to give a review?
Not personally, but I've heard it's one of the best superhero films in a while, and a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes is never a bad sign.
I just saw it. It's amazing. Not one flaw. (in my opinion)
Favorite line -
Thor: He's still my brother.
Black Widow: He killed 82 people in two days.
(pause)
Thor: He's adopted.
I'm seeing The Avengers this weekend. :D SO EXCITED!
Think I might ditch it for Dark Shadows instead, it's Tim Burton/Danny Elfman/Johnny Depp therefore I must view it even if it ends up godawful
I just watched an incredibly beautiful film by Tim Burton: "Big Fish." It was truly brilliant, and not at all like any of his other works. That was a great film.
Do I dare ask how Dark Shadows was?
The Avengers was really really awesome guys :D Like holy shit.
Quote from: SuperFireKirby on May 13, 2012, 05:46:19 PMDo I dare ask how Dark Shadows was?
I haven't seen it yet, I'm going next weekend with Margaret. Reviews have been kind of in the range from "bad" to "mildly good" so I wouldn't get your hopes up XD haha
I dunno, it really didn't look... promising? My mom said she wanted to see it because she remembers the original one and that it was really funny.
Idk, I'm sure the original one is the better one. Remakes USUALLY don't go over too well....
Funny? ...it's based on a 60s/70s soap opera that apparently was mostly really strange
Hey, my mom said that, not me. =/ I guess she found it funny?

Hell yeah! My fav quote: "I know that the council has made their decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've decided to ignore it" -Nick Fury :3
I also loved when during the final fight, Hulk just straight punches Thor out of the scene. XD
Yes and
Loki: "I will not be bullied by such a puny-" (SLAMMING NOISES).
Hulk: "Puny God"
That was GLORIOUS. It was like Loki was a rag doll. But ouch, that had to hurt.
And Hulk screaming Iron Man into waking up... so great.
AND PHIL WAS AN ADORABLE CAPTAIN AMERICA FANBOY
While Avengers was good, I couldn't help but cringe when I saw how the Marvel depictions piss all over the Norse pantheon... I mean, Thor and Loki brothers? Yeah, right...
Also, while Thor might be badass in the mythology, he is neither the strongest fighter nor the god of war. Nobody show Heimdall and Tyr any respect...
..wasn't Loki actually adopted?
Anyway, he shouldn't have been raised alongside Thor. While the gods of Asgard were quite liberal regarding having kids with different parents, Loki and Thor have very little in common, except that they lived near each other.
@nebbles Only in the film....it's extremely inaccurate as far as the mythology behind the characters go.
Huh. More you know.
Quote from: Cobraroll on May 14, 2012, 12:04:32 AMwhile Thor might be badass in the mythology, he is neither the strongest fighter nor the god of war. Nobody show Heimdall and Tyr any respect...
My thoughts too They portrayed him as an equal to the other Avengers, whose man-made technology seems to be equal to those of a magical god. I understand if Captain America's shield can deflect Mjölnir, but I think it should at least have been capable of breaking the glass cage without too much effort. I thought both he and the hammer were magical?
He seemed to have the same strength as the Hulk, but less durability, though he makes up with that in being able to summon lightning.
Captain America was portrayed as being slightly weaker than the other Avengers in terms of intelligence, strength and combat experience. He was easily tossed around by Loki, and even when Iron Man came to help, the captain looked kind of useless.
I think Hulk was a bit overpowered. There were like 30 aliens simultaneously auto-firing at him and he wasn't harmed the slightest bit, just overwhelmed in terms of movement.
Wasn't Nick Fury shot twice, and he didn't die?
Also, after Thor fell it looked like he became unworthy to wield his hammer for a moment. He opened his hand as if calling his hammer but Mjölnir didn't come. I wonder how he regained control so quick, and without doing much physically.
To be fair, since the class cage was tumbling through like... 30,000 feet at a rapid pace, Thor was trying his damn best to escape without injuring himself.
And I think he couldn't pick up his hammer for a moment because he was maybe damaged for a bit? But then he got over it or something.
...I don't know diddly squat about Norse mythology and I really should I am sorry

I thought that since Thor was a god he should have been able to take on the other Avengers with ease. I didn't like when Mjölnir hit Captain America's shield(and there was an explosion) The shield wasn't dented but when the aliens shot his shield it got all scratched up.
Hulk isn't a juggernaut so why didn't he ever get hurt?
They made Captain America look like a stupid ass throughout the whole movie. He was in the ice for 70 years (that could be wrong) not a millennia
Nick Fury isn't Wolverine or something. Why was he alive at the end of the movie?
And who was the guy talking to the alien leader at the end scene after the credits?
I think Captain America was iced for 60 years? Still, that's a lot of change. So he's still stumbling around getting used to things.
Exactly my point. They treated him like he didn't know what electricity was.
Well, it was played for laughs in one scene:
"It looks like it runs on some form of electricity..."
"Well, you're not wrong..."
Well, in the mythology, Thor is decidedly more badass than portrayed in the movie. For instance, he's said to have been able to level mountains with his hammer (and lightning usually accompanies each strike). He also had a pair of rather fearsome pets. To be fair, though, he was deceived on several occasions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor
I don't know if the English article explains it as much as the Norwegian one does, but I think it should list the most important of Thor's merits anyway.

But Hugo was a bad movie, and if you liked dark knight or any kind of action movie otherwise you can't dislike the marvel movies
I like the Dark Knight because the Joker's character is fascinating, not really because of the action. And I personally enjoyed Hugo... it was lengthy but the Parisian atmosphere and the characters were quite engaging to me. I still might see the Avengers. :P idk. Depends on whether I get the chance or not.
You should! If you like anything of Joss Whedon's work (not sure sure if you do or not) you'd love The Avengers.
C'moooon just see it!
Wait... Slow likes movies that don't involve Tim Burton or Studio Ghibli? Fascinating!
Also, Hugo wasn't bad, but Scorsese has done much, MUCH better movies(Aka every other movie he's directed)
Top 3:
1. LOTR Trilogy
2. POTC Trilogy
3. Courageous
I quite enjoyed Men in Black 3. I had never seen a Men in Black film before besides short sections of the second one, but I went and watched the first one later. The first was probably the best, but the third is pretty close. From what I've seen and heard, the second was pretty bad...
Also Danny Elfman's main theme just kicks ass. It's amazing to me that MIB was his first oscar nomination, though.
I kind of want to see this...

All of Judd Aptow's Films...
All of Nancy Myers' Films...
Oh, yeah... and you guys should look at Criterion Collection films.. those are the really great ones.
I think François Truffaut's "Les Quatre Cent Coups" is in that collection. Nouvelle Vague is quite strange... similar to Big Fish in some ways
FINALLY watched the Avengers, really like it, and I won't believe you if you say you hated it.
Anyways, looking forward to Brave. Also Expendables 2 looks interesting.
Rear Window was incredibly overrated, predictable, and not suspenseful in the least.
Slow, you just lost your opinion on movies for the next two weeks. Now go watch Rear Window again and realize how wrong you were.z
And I actually agree 100% with SFK's over the top post this time. Imagine that. What the hell slow, stop being a movie hipster.
But, it wasn't suspenseful at all. I expected it to be a good suspense movie. Maybe my expectations were too high, but while it was a good movie, it wasn't as good as anybody has made it sound to me.
It's not supposed to be a suspense movie..
But, even the story was fairly predictable. I DVR'd Hitchcock's "The Birds," I'm hoping I like that better.
You have to keep in Lind, back when Hitchcock made his films, no one had ever done anything quite like them. And since, HUNDREDS of films have taken his ideas in one way or another. Thats probably the reason his movies are predictable to you.
Batman was great, I wouldn't really talk about how it's not as good as dark knight as it's just different. Dark Knight is a great standalone film, while TDKR builds from the entire trilogy.
I agree, in my opinion you can't really compare the films beyond Batman Begins was the least amazing.
Picked up two movies this weekend, There Will Be Blood and The Prince of Egypt. Very satisfying indeed.

FINALLY watched Chicago, tis great and amazing and depressing and awesome.
Pop, six, squish, uh-uh, Cicero... Lip Chitz.
So tonight I watched "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" (known in other countries by the title of the book it's based on, "The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists"). It was absolutely brilliant. It's the type of movie SFK would love for its smartass, nonstop visual humor. The animation style, which is about like the producer's other works, "Wallace and Gromit" as well as "Chicken Run," is quirky but you'll grow to love it after a bit.
I actually read that book several years ago and remember finding it very intelligently funny. I think I'll have to go read it again, because I definitely enjoyed the film that much.
Yeah, SFK, I'd suggest you watch this film.
I've been meaning to ever since it was in theaters. It looks so awesome.
Going to watch Sweeney Todd for the first time tonight. <3
YAAAAY! Then you and Qew and I can fanboy about it!!!!
Saw The Iron Giant in a bargain bin the other day, and was all like "NOSTALGIA." So I bought it, watched it, and I must say, it is just as amazing as I remember(the last time I watched it was when I was probably, like, 8). Possibly even more so because now I get all the historical humor they threw into the movie. If you have not seen The Iron Giant, watch it right now. It's probably one of the best animated movies I've ever seen.
OMG NOSTALGIA BLAST. I LOVE THAT MOVIE SO MUCH.
I got The Iron Giant a while ago too, have yet to watch it again. Such a wonderful movie...
Finally got around to watching Donnie Darko (the Director's Cut version).
I watched it once, earlier this week, and I had originally intended to come straight here and write my opinions on it. Then I realized there were a lot of things I didn't understand about it. So I watched it again, this time with my brother. I still didn't really understand it, but this time I expected not to. I'm not sure you're supposed to.
It's one of the best films I've seen in a while, I think. I quite enjoyed it. It's easy to see why it has such a cult following.
For those of you who don't know or haven't seen it, Donnie Darko is a highly acclaimed movie about a teenager who talks a lot to someone named Frank. Frank is a six-foot-tall talking bunny rabbit and easily the creepiest thing I've seen in a movie in quite some time. It's a science fiction movie, about time travel really, and it keeps you guessing even after you finish it. I'm honestly not sure what to make of this film, other than the fact that I liked it and it was very engaging.
8/10, worth seeing...in my opinion.
I went to see "Looper" today.
I knew something was fishy when Joe, the protagonist, aimed his finger at the roof and said 'bang', and that the 'drug ' of the future (the setting is in the future) is shot into the user's eye. Now where has this been done before?
Turns out the guy who made the movie is a Cowboy Bebop fan.. :3
Not sure if I like the fact that he copied these things or not, but I'm a bit proud of myself for noticing :)

Lol I know how to find it, I just haven't thought about it since I finished the anime a few months ago.
I know that it's easy to find, I just wanted to help by giving you the link. :)
I wanna see Looper, mostly because of my giant fangirl crush on JGL and I heard it was really good.
Also I'm REALLY EXCITED for Wreck It Ralph and Lincoln next month!!
Can't wait to see Frankenweenie, it's been getting rave reviews and looks like a vintage Tim Burton film :D
Quote from: Nebbles on October 06, 2012, 11:05:05 AMI wanna see Looper, mostly because of my giant fangirl crush on JGL and I heard it was really good.
Looper had potential, but the ending really ruined everything. Ok, it really wasn't bad, it's probably just me being angry over the fact that HE STOLE IT FROM COWBOY BEBOP dammit!
OMG Wreck-it Ralph is less than a month away
Saw 50/50 last night. Had been wanting to see it since I saw previews when it was in theatres. Pretty great movie. Definitely one of the better comedies I've seen in a while.
Frankenweenie was really super awesome, I loved it more than I expected, but I don't recommend you go see it necessarily. It takes a certain mindset to not just go "wtf is this and how is disney releasing it." Yet, this film feels more like Disney than recent Disney releases. Take a look at some scenes from classic Disney movies--the forest scene from Snow White; Maleficent's transformation in Sleeping Beauty; pretty much the entire movie Pinnochio. What do they have in common? They're scary. Scarier than you would probably think. This film taps into that. And rather than Burton's recent style of "let's make this freak show look really pretty, but have a meh plot and not give a crap about continuity," this is a film with an actual story that keeps it together the whole way through(!), conveyed through that odd-yet-undeniably-charming stopmotion medium.
I think the characters were a huge part of this movie's success. Young Victor Frankenstein is a bit of a loner, but like Edward Scissorhands he's comparably normal when juxtaposed with the bizarre people surrounding him. And yet it's hard not to get into the gleefully weird spirit with characters such as "Weird Girl," a shriveled up girl with ridiculously big round eyes and a cat to match, or "Edgar E'Gore," a hunchback with perpetually bent arms and freakishly long slender fingers (voiced with surprising energy by The Middle's Atticus Shaffer).
On the surface, it's essentially a childrens' horror film. But on a deeper level, it's classic Disney--the story of a boy and his (nevertheless undead) dog. It's weird, but it's also a lot of fun.
oh that movie is the stupidest movie ever! :P :-X
My brother hated it as well :P
anything with ghosts and or zombies is totaly mindless to watch. ::)
You are a horrible Alt.
But getting away from that, I heard on the Grapevine that there is going to be an Alchymist Movie.
Quote from: SuperFireKirby on October 09, 2012, 07:01:10 AMSaw 50/50 last night. Had been wanting to see it since I saw previews when it was in theatres. Pretty great movie. Definitely one of the better comedies I've seen in a while.
oh god I loved 50/50 so much
Quote from: wariopiano on October 10, 2012, 04:42:21 PManything with ghosts and or zombies is totaly mindless to watch. ::)
Uhm, no. Just no. That opinion is more than a bit moronic. Just because a movie has ghosts or zombies does not make it mindless.
rolly eyes often indicates sarcasm ::)
So Argo looks pretty freaking fantastic. Unlike my usual thoughts of whats in theatres, there just seems to currently be an onslaught of fantastic looking movies out right now and in the near future. Argo, The Master, 7 Psychopaths, Skyfall, Looper, Trouble With the Curve, Frankenweinie(and Pitch Perfect actually looks pretty decent as well).
I might actually find myself going to a movie theatre.

okay, i dont usually watch movies with that cause im a dedicated christian.
...what is anti-Christian about ghosts and zombies? Just because something is dark or creepy doesn't mean it's anti-Christian. :p
some ''people'' believe that when they die they become ghosts and/or zombies.
But Christians believe that when they die they go be the Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven if God, and only God, has forgiven u of your sins, and have been born again.
so you're de-humanizing people who watch ghost/zombie movies. congratulations on your lovely judgment!!! and saying that christians can't watch movies like that or they won't be accepted into heaven when they die just wow wow wow your opinion is just so great!!!

Well movies with zombies and ghosts are100% fictional so....how is this relevant? Shaun of the Dead, Poltergeist, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Nightmare Before Christmas. All of these are great movies and all of them have zombies/ghosts. No one watches them because they believe ghosts and zombies are real(well...maybe Poltergeist), they watch them because they are fantastic movies that just happen to feature zombies/ghosts.
Open-mindedness is one of the keys to having a fantastic life.
i personally dont watch them because i believe i shouldnt.
some christins do and thats okay, but i dont.
u wont not go to heaven if u watch those movies as long u are born again.
I think u out did yourself a bit :P
I've lately been watching movies I wanted to see in theatres last year.
Saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. A bit hard to follow, none of the characters besides Gary Oldman's were developed enough for me to really care about them, and it was a bit dull at many times but it was still fairly decent. 6.5/10
Also saw Midnight In Paris, it was very interesting. The humor was witty, I thought the casting was awesome and the whole movie was pulled off excellently. Only problem I had was that Owen Wilson's character could get kind of annoying at times. But a great movie over all. 8.5/10
Can't wait for Skyfall!!!
I KNOW, RIGHT? Javier Bardem as the bad guy?!?! That's all I need to go see that movie.
^SFK you're just awesome. You like Top Gear and you have the same taste for movies as mine AND you like Kirby! :D
Saw The Transporter today.
It was, hands down, the dumbest action movie I've ever seen. I'm not sure whether I should thrash it for being a bunch of fight scenes tied together by lack of logic, or praise it for being a parody on the entire action film genre. If it was intended to be serious, it dethroned The Dark Knight Rises as "Plot hole movie of the year".
I guess it kinda falls somewhere in the middle, I can perceive it as both but it's not doing either particularly well.
Yeah, The Transporter films are pretty awful.
So I might go to the midnight premiere of Cloud Atlas. It just looks so awesome.
I'm on the fence about that movie... tell me how it is if you see it :D
But.... IT HAS TOM HANKS. PLAYING FIVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. Usually one Tom Hanks is enough to make a movie beautiful. BUT THIS ONE HAS TOM HANKS TIMES FIVE.
I may go blind from overexposure to awesomeness.
Wanna know something that sucks. 3-D movies if you have your glasses under the 3-D glasses. It's the dumbest thing ever.
Also, have to see Skyfall soon!!!
So after Disney's take-over of Lucasfilms, they just announced a new Star Wars prequel trilogy, VII, VIII and XI. Supposedly the 3 episodes were written at the same time the original trilogy was written, so it isn't going to be based on anything canon up to now. I have my trust in Disney, they make great movies, I just don't know if I'll enjoy the new movies if it isn't based off anything that I know.
I'll just have to wait till 2015 and see.
Wreck it Ralph was fantastic. If you like disney or videogames or both, then GOGOGO!
AGREED. Like, WOW that movie was perfect.
It WAS great, but I was kinda sad that most of the jokes were from the really old games that I didnt play. Im not positive since I havent played the series, but Im pretty sure there were alot from street fighter. At the climax (I wont reveal anything :P) I facepalmed myself since I KNEW what was going to happen and I couldnt believe I didnt see it sooner. I loved it :D
I didn't think the jokes were too old. Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Kart, and modern FPSs were most of the jokes.
Anyway, Wreck-it-Ralph was very good. It was formulaic, but it was a good way to show how the tried-and-true Disney formula can be presented in a way that feels fresh. 8/10.
Mario Kart? And I dont play FPS :P
Neither do I , but seeing as it was almost entirely mocking FPSs, I could get the gist. And the Sugar Rush game is pretty much any racing game ever.
Just finished watching Toy Story 3 again.
OH MY FEELS
Is... is there such a thing as a "Thanksgiving movie"?? Halloween movies, Christmas movies... but why not Thanksgiving? Is it forgotten, only remembered as a time of eating between the candy-eating holiday and the over-commercialized holiday... a time we once knew for harboring Christmas spirit...

It's the most amazing movie ever, as is almost every film by Hayao Miyazaki. Soundtrack is great too, as is every soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi. I'd really recommend BUYING it though, not illegally watching it.
The full length movie isnt on youtube, and I really dont want to start on a "part 1 of 9" movie. I normally use watchcartoonsonline.com but they always mess up the audio
Slow pssh I probably wont like it, I just wanna try it. Knowing me if I like it Ill probably end up buying everything related to it, so dont worry. And is it made by the same people as Spirited Away and Ponyo? (Im pretty sure theyre both made by the same people)
yupyup. All by Studio Ghibli, and those three were all directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Well, Lincoln was fantastic.
I mostly prefer thrillers, horrors and mysterious movies (such as detective movies) for the most part as I want excitement and something to think about. My favorite movie is "The Enemy of the State" which is an incredible thriller. The best horror movie imo is The Amityville Horror. It's been over 30 years old and yet it hasn't been beaten. Other examples of great thrillers/horrors are Shutter Island, Face/Off, 1408 & Butterfly Effect. Two of the best movies I've seen are actually both amazing dramas: Crash & Babel. I'm also a big Bond fan and I've seen most of the movies several times. Skyfall was indeed amazing.
Anyways, as for TV series (maybe the wrong topic but whatever) I think these amongst others are really good: Lost, Jericho, Heroes, Touch, Persons Unknown, Midsomer Murders, Medium & The Walking Dead.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Face/Off.

Yes because The Hobbit is getting fantastic reviews and Life of Pi looks like it sucks. Do you even think before you accuse me of having bad tastes?
No sir, I do not.
I have to admit I'm looking forward to Howard Shore's new score more than the film though :P
Watched Battle Royale.............
It's like a messed up version of the Hunger games.
I'm pretty sure hipsters would say that hunger games is a messed up battle royale.
Next week I will go watch The Hobbit. I will buy a ticket soon.
Well, Critics did not like The Hobbit very much, it would seem.
But as it would turn out, anyone who isn't a critic loved it! Metacritic: 58 from Critics, 86 from Users.
Rotten Tomatoes: 65% from critics, 81% from Users
Imdb User rating: 8.8
Every person I've talked to about the move: 100%
Critics needs to learn about movies, methinks.
Nah, it wasn't that great. The CGI orcs looked godawful and the runtime murdered me, especially with the drawn-out sequences not in the novel. Overall, I would give it a solid 6.5/10 (still a good movie, but LOTR is way superior).
Paprika

Overused joke, after watching that movie
Wow Ted was terrible. Disgustingly raunchy and barely funny.
^Haven't seen it, but anything from Seth MacFarlane is guaranteed to be complete shit. Even Marky Mark couldn't make his stuff good.
Finally saw The Dark Knight Rises. Twas pretty good, but it had some problems:
A. Waaaaaaay too much self-loathing. I mean, the first quarter of the movie was just Bruce Wayne hating his life and Alfred telling him he's not allowed to be Batman anymore.
2. Not enough Batman. We get, what, 3 Batman scenes in the whole movie?(Motorcycle chase and Catwoman, Bane fight #1, Bane fight #2 and bomb chase. I think that's it) Maybe half an hour of Batman in an almost 3 hour movie. NOT ENOUGH.
3. The Ra's Al Ghul child thingy at the last second(not gonna spoil it, even though it's not that big of a surprise) just left me scratching my head as to what the point of it was. It was kinda dumb, and all her actions following it were kinda dumb.
E. If you're gonna give your villain an insanely muffled voice, don't make him sound like Shaun Connery to boot. Seriously, Bane was difficult to understand at many points of the movie.
D. ROBIN'S NAME IS NOT ROBIN. IT IS DICK GRAYSON, DARN IT.(The first Robin, anyway)
But overall, The Dark Knight Rises was still a great movie. Not as good as The Dark Knight though. Heath Ledger's Joker is just waaaaaaaay too good(one of the best movie villains of all time, easily).

A: Agree, to a point...
2: Uhhh...
3: Certainly don't agree with that...
E: He actually wasn't THAT muffled...
D: I don't think he was really Robin, like that Robin you're thinking of, in a literal sense...
What I didn't think made sense about that movie was (SPOILERS):
How Wayne, broke and with a hurt back, made his way back from Pakistan, entered Gotham undetected, and, even though he was short on time, took his time to paint a freaking bat symbol on that bridge before he arrived.
Also, a 4 megaton nuclear warhead isn't that effective when detonated on the ground. Half the shock wave will go straight into the ground, most of the other half will go directly skyward. Only a tiny percentage of it will expand horizontally and damage stuff, and it will deplete very quickly with so many big buildings in between. There's a reason why warheads usually detonate a few hundred metres above ground.
Also, for some reason, when the Army is sent to Gotham, the first vehicles in their convoy are artillery guns. Those have NOTHING to do in Gotham in a situation like that. Even disregarding the collateral damage, they would be hilariously impractical fighting in the city itself. A battery of them on the other side of the river would be the most efficient way of using them. I guess the director wanted to use tanks, but had to settle for self-propelled artillery because tanks, being three times heavier, have to drive really far apart when crossing bridges, or the army had none available.
The big fight between mobsters and police was idiotic too. All the mobsters had guns, the police had not, yet everybody drop their arms and go straight for a fistfight instead.
Batman - The Dark Knight Rises: Plothole movie of the year 2012.
Sometimes you just need to not give a fuck and enjoy the movie.
I didn't even think about *spoiler kinda*the effectiveness of the warhead. I was too busy thinking that if the warhead is so insanely unstable that it will detonate itself in 5 minutes, dropping onto concrete and dragging it down a street(which Batman does before taking it into the sky) probably would have set it off.
And Slow, shaddap. The Dark Knight Rises had a bunch of problems with its plot, and refusing to recognize them is frivolous.
The only reason they did the thing with Ra's Al Ghul's child was because they needed a way to explain all the coincidences such as Bane knowing exactly where the secret tunnel was. I didn't like that. I would rather Bane had been some mysterious and well-planned villain where he was doing something that he had been planning for years. The way Bane died was terrible in my opinion. I mean, really? Batman has this giant fight with him and nearly destroys him by breaking his mask, and then he just gets shot with giant guns by catwoman while batman's just lying on the ground with a gun to his face. I agree with the thing about the random journey from Pakistan to a blocked-off and guarded island. There was no explanation. Also, a countdown would have been really nice. They show you about a week's worth of days, and all of a sudden the bomb is going to explode tomorrow.
There were faults, but I agree with slow. At least try to just watch a movie while you're watching it. No need to focus on all those little things until at least you've finished watching.
Also, the Robin thing: NOBODY IS GOING TO GET THE REFERENCE IF THEY CALL HIM DICK GREYSON. The point was to get everybody who watched the movie to go "Icwutudidthar"
THAT'S THEIR FAULT FOR NOT KNOWING WHO DICK GRAYSON IS.
I KNOW, RIGHT? EVERYONE IS SUCH A JERK.
JUB YOUR AVATAR JUST CHANGED TO TEDDIURSA AND I REALLY WANT TO HUG YOU NOW
I know I said I would watch The Hobbit a few weeks ago in this thread but things turned out differently and I actually watched it today. It was really amazing and I look forward to the other two movies in the series.
yeah, me too
Something crazy:
The Hobbit is 169 minutes
The extended Fellowship is 228 minutes
The extended Two Towers is 235 minutes
The extended Return of the King is 263 minutes
The total length of all the Lord of the Rings movies that has been released is 895 minutes or 14 hours and 55 minutes. I'm not sure many movie series can claim to be that long and there are still two more movies to be made. (Star Wars is a little over 13 hours.)
Just wait. 2 more Hobbit movies, and then the extended editions of all three. It's gonna be nuts.
Just watched The Dark Knight again. I forgot how intense and awful the prison scene is. :'(

Fun fact: The scene where Ledger is walking out of the hospital and it's blowing up was written so that he just walked out and onto the bus. Instead, he completely improvised turning around and the button not working.
Yep, I knew dat.
A WAY MORE FUN FACT: The several different writers of the movie all had their own ideas of the Joker's motivation, character and backstory, but they decided NOT to discuss them with each other, and instead produced a script where different parts of the script are written with different character interpretations in mind, so that the Joker's actions seem genuinely disordered and unpredictable.

:o Those are both pretty awesome....
Just watched Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
I thought it was really cool!
Great Expectations is being made into a film starring a bunch of Harry Potter people--Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, and Ralph Fiennes are all in it!
Or, I should say,
was made and
were in it. Because this movie was released in the United Kingdom back in November. Why is there no US release date yet? It looks fantastic and I just read the book for school--actually going to take a class period and teach the class about it.
I just watched Argo with my dad.
I can definitely see why it got the Oscar. It's excellent, strongly recommend. If the R rating is tripping you up, it's pretty much only because of the language.
The ending was so good....
Yeah, Argo was pretty fantastic
I have to many favorite movies....
But I think one of my life long favorites would definitely be Star Wars!
So, everyone knows about Shaun of the Dead, I hope?
Well GUESS WHAT. THERE'S A FUCKING CUBAN VERSION.
IT'S CALLED JUAN OF THE DEAD. IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL.
Wow, I actually had to look it up because I didn't believe it....And there it is
WATCH IT. IT'S AMAZING
I'm assuming it's like a parody of a parody?
I watched Silver Linings Playbook, it was beautiful and probably the best romantic comedy I've ever seen. I usually hate romantic comedies.
I saw The Great Gatsby for the second time, it is truly an excellent film. Probably because Luhrmann decided to actually stick to the book.
Daisy is my favorite character. I hate her so much. I loved reading The Great Gatsby because all of the characters are disgusting and selfish other than Gatsby and, to some extent, Nick. That translated pretty well to Luhrmann's movie, though too often it portrayed Daisy as an innocent victim when in reality she was the instigator of many if not most of the bad things that happened.
I plan to see Gatsby pretty soon... hopefully today or tomorrow...I hope I like it, because I enjoyed the book a lot. I've heard mixed reviews on it.

It's honestly not a bad movie it's just terrible by ghibli standards. The first 45 minutes are incredible but then the rest is awful, the story just falls apart and I'm not even sure the writers knew what was going on. Hayao Miyazaki's touch is notably absent and the plot can hardly be called a plot. On the plus side though the animation and music are incredible.
Hated the 1st hunger games, but catching fire was excellent. First time in a while that I've really been excited during a movie.

Oooh! I want to see it.
The first one pretty good

I saw Gravity recently; it was good, but seeing it at home is probably not the same as seeing it in theaters.
Catching Fire followed the book more closely and I thought it was better.
Finally saw the two and a half-hour cocaine/hooker binge know as The Wolf on Wall Street. I was thoroughly impressed with Scorsese and DiCaprio's ability to make such a piece of shit human being into an extremely likable protagonist. Definitely worth the watch if you haven't seen it already.
Go see Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'VE ALREADY SEEN IT TWICE AND I'M GONNA TRY TO GO AGAIN
It actually looked pretty mediocre from the previews. Did they just advertise it poorly?
Meh marvel movies never do anything for me despite how much everyone seems to love them. I'll be skipping this one
Everyone tells me it was by far the best Marvel movie(though that's honestly not saying much...at all). I'm probably gonna see it tomorrow

It's just got a bad rep because it's not as famous as like Iron man and Captain America. Not many people have heard of guardians but it really was so great.
I watched it with a friend today. I'm really not a fan of Marvel so kill me, but I didn't enjoy the movie very much.

Anyone seen Mulholland Drive? I thought it was fantastic.
I have to write two school assignments about it in about a month, which will be absolutely crazy. One where I analyze the ending, and one assignment where I choose my own area to focus on. I was the only person in class who got a movie this crazy...

I'd watch it again just for the scene where they go up the elevator.

Saw The Giver yesterday. Was pretty good, largely was faithful to the book, and kept the same overall message. I'm happy with it.
Quote from: blueflower999 on August 23, 2014, 05:32:32 PMlargely was faithful to the book,
I heard the complete opposite? Then again I haven't read the book in a few years or seen the movie
Largely was faithful. A few character roles are changed and the climax gives a bit more detail than the book does, but I feel as if the changes had purpose rather than just altering things for the sake of altering things. I've seen a lot worse adaptations.

I recently watched both the 2013 and 1974 film versions of The Great Gatsby; overall, I'd say that the 2013 version better captured the feel of the book, although it's still lacking in some areas (using modern music, for example, is a very jarring contrast in tone; building on that point, the beginning half-or-so has a completely different feel than the latter part, as if the director wanted to go in one direction for the mood of the film, but changed his mind part of the way through, yet didn't bother to redo the first part at all).
However, although the beginning scenes of the 1974 version capture the feel of the book better than those of the 2013 version (right up until the point where Nick first meets Gatsby- at that scene, it stops), the rest of the film is lacking. Completely unnecessary rearrangements of/additions to various parts of the book are very frustrating (an example being the earlier-mentioned scene of when Nick meets Gatsby for the first time: instead of bumping into him during the party, Gatsby has one of his servants bring him up).
Cast-
Jay Gatsby: Leonardo DiCaprio > Robert Redford
Nick Carraway: Tobey Maguire = Sam Waterston (I didn't really prefer one over the other)
Daisy Buchanan: Carey Mulligan > Mia Farrow (only slightly, though)
Tom Buchanan: Joel Edgerton >>>>> Bruce Dern
Jordan Baker: Elizabeth Debicki < Lois Chiles (both films seemed to downplay Jordan's role)
George Wilson: Jason Clarke < Scott Wilson (only slightly, though)

Maze Runner just looks like another Hunger Games wannabe. Not that I have a super high opinion of The Hunger Games, the movies are alright, but "teens in a dystopian future fighting for freedom and shit" is definitely the dominant trope for movies these days, thanks to The Hunger Games success.

Different
Divergent, Maze Runner, and Hunger Games are all
very moderately different.
It's like calling The Hobbit and Twilight a Harry Potter wannabe
Maze Runner is essentially about lab rats, nothing about freedom fighting.
And Divergent was a utopia, the Blue clan just usurped that. Not freedom fighting.

The maze was a nice idea. But think about the plot points. The amnesiac hero is introduced, thus giving a reason for explaining every intricacy rather than just showing how it works. The hero decides he wants the hardest and most important job, but finds out he needs years of training. He makes a stupid/reckless choice which gets him the job no newcomer should have gotten. He then proceeds to solve mysteries in a short time period that nobody had figured out before, despite them living there much longer. I can't remember where I also saw this, but it seems pretty common.

What did you even like so much about it tho like I found myself zoning out and it was fine and mildly entertaining but it has no value beyond a popcorn movie so I don't know why people keep hyping it up. The same goes for every marvel movie, it's not torture to sit through by any means but there is absolutely nothing about them that sticks with me at all
I'm sorry for you. I'll just quote one of the various reviews because otherwise I would probably just be paraphrasing it

Yeah I didn't get any of that from watching it lol I didn't find anything "immaculate" about the movie

Actually Avengers is the second best movie ever. Guardians of the Galaxy is the best movie ever, thank you very much.
I just thought it was a boring movie that was, more or less, a 2 1/2 hour action sequence. There was a total lack of an interesting plot, the characters are all nice and bland, there's absolutely nothing emotionally engaging in the whole movie, and the action really doesn't offer anything dazzling or visually mind-blowing, aside from from pretty good effects(which you'd expect from a move with that kind of budget). The story was basically three different scenes, Avengers all unite, they fight some dudes on a big floaty ship, they fight some alien dudes in New York. It's not a terrible movie, but it is a dumb movie. A really dumb movie.
SFK for some reason your movie reviews always make me feel like you watched it while putting most of your attention on something else >:(
It was ok. The special effects were good, the acting was good, but the plot and characters were too minimalistic
I guess my expectations are too high after Lord of the Rings

Then please, instruct me on the film's finer intricacies which I seem to have missed.
You will probably just be one of those people that dislikes things for arbitrary reasons that 90+% us won't understand.
It just does the "summer blockbuster" very well. Overall flows nicely, script is witty and characters interact well. Doesn't need some complex layered plot or deep character analysis or anything, just enough to be an enjoyable ride.
It's the kind of movie you go out with a group of friends to see and have a good time. Not so much one you will be critically analyzing afterwards, but perhaps talking about some scenes or if nerdy enough relations to comics.
See: Independence Day, Air Force One
Also Nocturne, I actually don't know whether I can like one better because ahh they both are just great
Hey kefka did you notice that Peter Quill had 12% of a plan
and Iron Man told pepper to take 12% of the credit?
SFK
@SFK Avengers isn't a 3 act play. It does a good job of introducing the avengers and actually sets up a conflict within the avengers- A power play between Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. Black Widow and Hawkeye have a past, and Hawkeye is under the control of Loki's staff- which, by the way, seems to have the power of an infinity stone, like the Tesseract. Which is also set up in the avengers, and is expanded in Guardians. Nick Fury brings along Bruce Banner and when Loki sees this he ALLOWS himself to get captured. His plan is to turn Bruce Banner into the hulk. That's pretty much scene one. Plenty of witty comments too- "Listen well, brother-" *Iron Man crashes into Thor and carries him off* "I'm listening."
Thor: "You have no idea what you are dealing with!"
Iron Man: "Uh, Shakespeare in the park? Does mother know you weareth her drapes?"
Audience: BURN
Iron Man: "That guy was playing Galaga. Thought we wouldn't notice, but we did."
Robert Downey Jr. Etc. etc.
Your "lame scene 2 where they fight some dudes on a ship" also contains one of the important turning points of the movie- Agent Phil's death. This sort of gets the avengers to start working together, with some help/trickery from Nick Fury. The hulk falls from the sky and lands somewhere far away and thor gets trapped in a glass dome in free fall. Still a couple of witty comments but this is by far the most conflict-filled part of the movie. Natasha smashes Hawkeye's head in and he's fixed all of a sudden.
"Suit up."
"So that's what it does." *dies*
"Scene 3" where all of a sudden I guess they're teleported to new York because according to you this had 3 parts, is the main action scene. Has the epic music, the epic smashes, and you can see them starting to lose to the endless wave of Chitari. Not only that, but Nick Fury's directors sent a nuke straight toward New York. The wave of minions dies down for a while and you see bruce banner puttering in on a motorbike. ("Son, you've got a condition.") They are able to hold back the chitari for a while, but they can't hold on forever. Worse, that nuke from earlier is still coming in. Referencing the power play from earlier, Iron Man is willing to sacrifice himself and carries the nuke through the wormhole (which, of course obviously sprang out of existence from nowhere according to you) and also has a sad moment with Pepper, also kind of ironic too. Natasha closes the portal with Loki's staff, (what portal?) and of course theatrically on target iron man makes it back through the portal just in time for it to close.
"I AM A GOD!"
*smashes Loki into the floor*
"Puny God."
"Hey you guys ever had Schwarma?"
Also Avengers theme is A++
tldr don't diss marvel or I get mad ;D
@maelstrom I don't know if you count this as anything but Avengers made nearly twice as much box as any of the LoTR movies did, in a time where fewer people actually go to theaters.
Yeah.
Dude if you're trying to discredit LOTR I'll stop you there you will not succeed
Yeah, more than half the great lines in the avengers were from Robert Downey jr.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that
I will say Robert Downey Jr is absolutely beautiful, no matter the role. And Nocturne, maybe you should consider that when LoTR came out, there was no 3D or D-Box and their correlating up charges, and regular movie tickets were twice as cheap as they are now. If you're suggesting that the Avengers is better than LoTR, than no. Just no. It's not. Ever.
Also, Kefka I know it's supposed to be a "fun" movie and such. It's the reason I don't bother trying to figure out Pacific Rim or Godzilla, which are dumb movies in their own right(dumb, but fucking BAD ASS). But there difference is I actually had fun watching those movies. Avengers was boring to me, basically that's what it comes down to.

In other news I recently watched "Big Trouble in Little China" which is this AMAZING 80s B-movie that anybody who likes campy bullshit films should watch. Ok, I need to see this now.
It was good but it felt so overwhelmingly similar in style to Nolan's other film Inception that I couldn't help feeling a sense of staleness, especially considering that Inception is the better film of the two. Interstellar was very good and like I said it's probably a 9/10 or 10/10 for me, but I think that Inception accomplishes everything Interstellar does and does it a little bit better.
But god if you get the chance see Interstellar in IMAX. It's crazy cool.
It's still on my to-watch list along with like 3 or 4 other movies lol
I'd say that Interstellar is the better film between it and Inception.
Inception was cool and all, but Interstellar didn't rely as heavily on suspension of disbelief to tell its story.
Still haven't seen interstellar, but I did go see Mockingjay last weekend and it was pretty good. All of the Hunger Games movies so far have done a great job of following the books pretty strictly.

Yeah and I'm pretty sure you see Seth Rogan's dick at some point during the movie.
I would think so.
DENG finally got around to seeing John Wick. Phenomenal pure violent action with Keanu, for anyone desiring such a thing you will get more than you expect and it will be glorious.
I watched Gone Girl again today and holy shit the movie is just incredible. I absolutely adore that film. It's a weird one though.
I also watched Rent for the first time and thought it was unspeakably bad; don't waste your time if you haven't seen it unless you like gross music and a story that thinks it's more important than it is.
Had the misfortune of seeing Mortdecai last week. Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. Definitely the worst movie I have ever paid to see.
The grand champion in that category for me is Transformers 2. I never fathomed you could make robot fighting and explosions boring.

Imo, Rap isn't even music. It's like some bored guys are just writing corny poems about their girlfriend who broke their heart. Then they "speak" it in the same constant voice tone while a beat is in the backround.....
I call it lazy singing :P

I was looking up price for some of your wanted games on eBay, and apparently, a brand new Dark Moon game (with free shipping) is just as expensive as a worn out original Luigi's Mansion!
Try Xenoblade Chronicles or Ocarina of Time 3D
Or Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn/Path of Radiance
I don't have a 3DS :/
I meant to look for prices.
It's not that expensive. You could easily find a used original model for 90-110.
Even cheaper if you check your local craigslist.
I got mine for 160
I'll have to look!
Thanks! :)
I have every game on your "need to get" list. Except Dark Moon, that is my brother's.
I have almost every possible Nes, DS, DSI, Wii, Wii-U and 3DS game, but alas, I have no N64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, GBC, or Snes games

Surprisingly, after a couple seconds youtube searching, there aren't any places where I can watch the room.
What a pity.
that's one of those movies you see with some friends after driving down into the city with a box of plastic spoons, waiting for the perfect moment to start shouting and throwing... uh, it doesn't have the same experience when you're at home by yourself watching it.
Going to watch Sweeney Todd for the first time tonight.
I ADORE Sweeney Todd!! Have fun!
I saw Interstellar yesterday; while I really liked the film overall, I thought the ending could have been done a little better.
I felt that way at first, but I've done some extensive thinking about it and I believe it was really well done the longer I think about it.
it reminded me of inception so naturally I liked it

You spoiler at your own peril.
You have been warned.

Even weirder is that there's a 7:00 pm showing today. Like, how much did they have to pay to get permission??
Saw Avengers with friend a few hours ago, was gud. Very enjoyable action/comic flick :D

Then I'd better avoid it

not much as it actually increases revenue and brings more people than a midnight release. It's not that uncommon.
Saw the movie.
It was fantastic.
Go see it. Now.
Also, Ultron is actually one of the most humorous villains in Marvel cinematic history (second only to Loki). Seriously.
Well we already know he's a fan of Disney movies, so of course he'll be humorous.

I somehow had not watched Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained until recently. I am glad I rectified that. Ah, Tarantino.
I still gotta see Django Unchained.
It's basically Inglorious Basterds, but replace nazis with slavery and Leo DiCaprio.
So I re-watched all six Star Wars movies in a marathon from Episode 1 to Episode 6, partially because I wanted to review them some time before the 7th came out and partially because I had been hearing a lot of hate for Episodes 1, 2, and 3, and I was curious if they were really that much worse than 4, 5, and 6.
I don't see anything wrong with them. In fact I think I like the prequels more than the original three movies. Is there something wrong with me like why does everyone hate them so much
it's cause they're stupid
Star Wars III is the best of the 6 and anyone who likes the original trilogy better than Revenge of the Sith is kidding themselves

I agree with you actually lol. I've seen all six of the movies countless times but when I watched them all from beginning to end, III definitely stuck out as being the best. The writing is great, the effects are at their most impressive, everything comes to a huge climax and topples into despair.
Imo, III had a great script, great special effects, and great music.
The acting however, was absolutely terrible.

I don't really like any of the Star Wars films tbh
The poor taste (or at least flame bait mockery of it) is pretty impressive in this thread. On one hand it's sort of amusing, on the other it's moderately disgusting.
The prequels had a lot of problems, but the least of them is the overall story. That said most people have issues with the prequels because they aren't, nor do they try to be, the original trilogy.
I do agree that Episode III is easily the best, critically or otherwise, in the entire series because it's the one that snaps the entire series into view. Sure, the original trilogy is fairly self contained, both trilogies are; but as it stands the entire series is best interpreted as one story, rather than two parts.
Personally when I re-watch the series this summer my preferred order is 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. It's a much better grand narrative and is probably how I'll introduce them to my kids.
Disregarding the first one which was a complete and total mess of a story, 2 and 3 had a perfectly reasonable overarching plot. Where they fell apart was mostly in acting and dialogue, plus some really weak or nonsensical writing choices, like the vague inclusion of jango fett and horrible way they dealt with grevious.

Quote from: Dudeman on September 15, 2015, 10:26:17 PMI can. :/ I think there's no reason to live-actionify The Jungle Book, of all movies.
As far as I know, Disney has been planning on making live-action versions of their classics for a while! They've done Cinderella already, and it was a surprisingly great movie (from what I've heard, I want/need to see it still). Then they have the Beauty and the Beast one coming out, along with The Little Mermaid in the works (for what seems like forever). Then the actual trailers for The Jungle Book and The Legend of Tarzan are out, too. Both look pretty promising! I'm excited! (Coming from the film major who WANTS to make successful live-action films based off of cartoons in the future)
I was a bit sceptical at first about the live-action movies idea, but Cinderella was fantastic, you should definitely watch it! Considering everyone already knows the story, the film makers had to surprise and awe the audience by other means, and I do believe they have succeeded. I don't quite know what to think about The Jungle Book just from watching the trailer, so I'll simply have to wait and see. :) (However, nothing will beat the Russian cartoon version that I watched when I was a kid, it follows the original book)
I love the Russian version haha. But I'm very excited for the new Disney one too!
Can vouch for the awesomeness of the 2015 Cinderella.
Upcoming Alice film looks slick, I should probably watch the prior film tho
Do it. If only because Alan Rickman is a caterpillar.
Seriously though, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was wonderful (pardon the pun) and captured the weirdness while combining it with Burton's typical dark filter. My one gripe is how it seemed like everything lore-wise had to be explained or given physical form, removing some of the fantasy and replacing it with a world with definite rules.
Spoiler
Imo, the Jabberwocky was the prime example. Giving an appearance to the poetic beast seemed wrong somehow, even if Christopher Lee voiced him.
Eh, the original Jabberwocky poem was accompanied by a Tenniel illustration that looked similar to Burton's Jabberwock. So it had an actual form from the beginning. IMO the first movie was very nice, and has maybe my favorite film score by Danny Elfman, who is my favorite composer. So that's saying something. (Seriously, Alice's Theme is such an incredible piece of work.)
So I'm very excited for Alice Through the Looking Glass, not only because of its connection to the previous film which I loved, but because Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are two of my favorite books ever. They're really wonderful (like you said, no pun intended).

I'm hella excited for Alice Through the Looking Glass. I rewatched the 2010 Alice in preparation and found that I liked it even more in retrospect.

Saw Captain America: Civil War yesterday. I enjoyed it, but I can recognize and understand its flaws (so if you say you didn't like it, I can probably understand why).
Spoiler
+ Black Panther was great (standing there and taking those bullets from the helicopter... FFWWFFMMWMWMFMFMFMW), especially his scene with Zemo toward the end.
+ Spiderman and his interactions with the others.
+ Airport Battle was 10/10.
+ Zemo killing the super-soldiers actually surprised me, and I liked how that scene went from Captain America, Winter Soldier, and Iron Man making peace to work together to Iron Man vs. the other two (I thought it felt at least somewhat genuine, despite how contrived it might have felt to some people).
+ Vision x Wanda OTP (plus both were awesome using their powers!)
o I felt like the film was more cluttered overall than Age of Ultron, but didn't necessarily feel bloated because I thought it was pulled off better (i.e. everything was related and brought together nicely in the end); it definitely felt like Avengers 2.5 (to be fair, that's what happens when you answer the question "Where are all the other superheroes when this stuff happens?).
o Unlike some people/reviewers, I was perfectly fine with accepting the reasons for the split between the Avengers. With the exception of Tony (who was guilt-ridden- the earlier scene in front of the elevator helped to hammer that in; this is something we've seen before, so at least it's consistent), not everyone else on his side seemed entirely gung-ho about the whole thing, but rather, did it out of necessity. This is something that's definitely easy to look too much in to, so it might detract from the film for a lot of people!
o Killing off a first-act villain again? Really?
o Just a little musing, it would have been interesting if they had killed off a major character, like, Iron Man (Cap accidentally go an inch too far, anybody?).
- Zemo was an interesting character and villain, but not really a good or really developed villain; Zemo could have been more prominent throughout the film; it definitely would have made his final speech about the Avengers more impactful (not that it wasn't already). As it was, he felt like more of a background story to the other plot points/events, which isn't really a good thing.
- There could have been a little bit more humor, especially toward the beginning of the film. The humor that was there was great, though!
- That font that they used for location transitions was kind of weird and felt out of place (the only time it worked was for the "QUEENS" transition because SPIDERMAN HYPE). Maybe because it was too large and didn't have borders (not really a fan of abrupt stuff like that unless it works really really well)? Has it appeared in any other Marvel films? I can't remember.
another film from Marvel Galaxy, anyone watched Doctor Strange?
A little disappointed, I like Avengers, I'm a fan of Benedict but i think Benedict was born to be Sherlock only.
I liked it but I was ticked that their explanation of Magic was something something dimensional energy
The MCU aims for a ""realistic"" explanation of the powers of its characters. The first to do this was Thor, with the Bifrost and his magic being described as "technology that we don't understand yet". I haven't seen Doctor Strange yet, but I was curious how they'd explain this one. "Dimensional energy" seems like a fine science-babble explanation to me.
they didn't really explain it though they just said oh yeah dimensional energy it's magic lalala
I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them today. I was duped twice by that movie; twice, I say!
Spoiler
First time was because I thought they were going to play it straight and have Credence "defect" to the good guys and become an informant against Graves.
Second time was kind of my own fault; I reverse-spoilered myself because, though I knew he was playing Grindelwald, I had heard that Johnny Depp wasn't going to be in the movie, so I totally wasn't expecting Graves to be Grindelwald. In hindsight, the Deathly Hallows symbol should have given me enough of a hint, though I thought it was merely a fan nod because of how little significance was put to it at first (i.e. it was half-offscreen during its first appearance).
Also, Eddie Redmayne was great. Good movie overall, though I'm fearful how the sequels might turn out.
That movie wasn't very good

Whoa, what? Force Awakens is a much better movie than Rogue One. Fine, it basically borrowed A New Hope's story, but at least there was good character development, and it's a decent story framework to begin with. Rogue One didn't explore anybody's character, and it took forever to build the story to a captivating point. That said, the last half hour was solid when it came to action and overall plot. But I didn't care about a single character, and almost every character basically just fits their role for that plot, however strange their decisions are as a result. When everybody's favorite character coming out of that movie is a literal robot, there might be a problem.
That's being a little harsh on it, because there are definitely really good parts. I really enjoy the concept of the movie. Everything about why it exists is a great idea. I just think they didn't execute it very well.

I've honestly given up on getting deep characters out of movies as a whole, or even really deep plots. They're just too short for me to become attached to a character. So, yeah, while the characters weren't great, they weren't terrible.
Why did I say it was better than 7? Well, the end of 7 left a really bad taste in my mouth. Everything that happened on Starkiller base felt very rushed, like the movie refused to take it's time at all. The final lightsaber duel came off as forced, and had the ending we knew was coming, but never felt like it earned it's victory at all. Don't even get me started on the whole Luke Skywalker thing at the end. That felt tacked on, rushed and too drawn out, and the worst sequel bait I've seen in a long time.
Rouge One, on the other hand, had a very rushed opening. Up until they reach steampunk gangster, it's all a mush. After that, however, it gets much more satisfying. As forced as
those two character's relations may have been, it led very, very well into what was A New Hope. It left me with a much more satisfied feel than 7 ever did. And that's why I liked it much more.
^Movies can absolutely have deep and complex characters and plots. The ones that the mainstream audiences go for, not so much. I hate Star Wars. It's gross pandering and not entertaining at all.
Quote from: Zunawe on December 22, 2016, 02:37:44 PMWhen everybody's favorite character coming out of that movie is a literal robot, there might be a problem.
you mean BB 8

Even the original trilogy? That seems a bit extreme to say.
Popping in to be that guy who loves Star Wars but thinks the films are probably its weakest aspect. Also the original trilogy is okay, but not terribly fantastic cinema. Empire Strikes Back is easily the best of the three (no surprise there).
Propose renaming thread "Movie Hipsters"
sounds accurate
I like Marvel because there are big boom
Marvel movies are just action porn, and they generally do a pretty good job of that. I don't know why you guys hate on them because that's their entire purpose and they fulfill it. I don't go in expecting some high brow character arc or amazing storyline, I expect to be entertained, and that entertainment is enhanced by there being an overarching story connecting them, regardless of how silly/genero it may be. The fact that it's all comic dudes that you may or may not have had some extracurricular investment in is also pretty neat.
^you might not treat them as incredible films in that regard, but the general public does and it gets really annoying for people who don't like action flicks
hey action movies are the best kind of movies

People will like what they like, but just because its popular (or perhaps more "common" or "base" in its appeal) doesn't make it any better worse than other fare by default.
Is there anyone here who likes the films of Laika? The four films they've made are Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings. I'm a huge, huge fan of their work and style of stop-motion and have been revisiting a couple of their movies. My favorite is The Boxtrolls, because it's super quirky and the animation is spectacular and the story is really sweet and interesting. Has anyone else seen that one, or the others?
My favorite scene in The Boxtrolls is a really intricate dance sequence where all of the puppets are waltzing in perfect time with the score. You have the main kid characters trying to dance their way across the floor, while the film's villain (who for plot purposes is dressed in drag) is shoving people out of his way trying to catch up with them. It's a really exhilarating and astounding bit of animation, and I've watched that particular sequence soooo many times just trying to figure out how they achieved the camera angles and fluidity of it all. I really recommend checking it out if you're the sort of dork who thinks stop-motion animation is neat.
nitro does. I think stopmotion is cool, but I'm not too invested in it and those types of movies don't seem interesting to me.
I kind of feel like Laika has the same quality as Pixar in terms of animation and having a heart to their stories, though
I don't usually like the family type feel good movies
That's fair. I like them as long as they aren't filled with stupid jokes.
I just don't like them when the reason you're supposed to feel good is really dumb.
The Iron Giant is a beautiful movie and I love it.
you've never seen the iron giant
until now
and
freakin australians man
I'm fairly certain I've never posted here.
Has anyone seen Interstellar? :D
plenty. Was good, like inception.
LEGO Batman Movie was another home run from WAG, I was impressed.

Heya, I'm glad you posted this recommendation! I have no idea how come I haven't heard of this studio before or watched any of their movies. There's a completely different "feel" to their work - the realistic textures and the quirky characters are the most memorable parts.
It almost seems as though nothing can stop the creators, there's no limitation to their work. Some scenes made me imagine how the staff would sit together at the planning stages, saying "this idea is crazy, we love it, let's do it." So much collaboration and time (!) invested into this, just... wow! Makes you appreciate every second of the movie.
I'm really glad you think they're cool! Which movie(s) did you watch? And what were your favorite scenes or movies of the ones you saw?

I've watched all four of them during the last few months and would love to watch them again - just need to promote them to someone at home so that we can watch them all together. :)
Hmm, at first no specific scene or movie came to mind, but there's definitely improvement to be seen from one movie to the next, with Kubo and the Two Strings having spectacularly seamless animation. The leaf boat is an amazing prop and I'm still baffled by how Monkey's fur was made to look so detailed.
It would be difficult to pick a favourite scene, but all of Kubo's origami creations were mesmerising. I also liked the different settings in Coraline, the lighting played such a large role in conveying just the right mood - from warm and inviting to chilling and terrifying. If this movie wasn't animated I would've found it hard to fall asleep afterwards.
I'm sure it will be a completely different experience once I watch each movie a second time. ;)
Yaaaay I'm so happy now! (And if you watch them again, be sure to stay all the way through the credits, they always put a funny little featurette at the end)
So like I don't like lilo and stitch a ton but dang
That's some fantastic writing it's unbelievable
The Emoji Movie sucked and no one should see it, even ironically.
You're not telling us you saw it, are you?
Oh he saw it. He was so excited to see how bad it was going to be.
It was not worth it.
You told me you liked it a lot
Nah it's pretty bad, wouldn't recommend. It's fun to joke about though
I guess it was pretty "meh", huh?
Yep. I get the joke but it's horrible, just like the movie.
Lego ninjago was pretty good. It didn't live up to the expectations its predecessors set, but it's different in an exciting way. Slow wouldn't like it though, since it's basically a superhero movie
It makes me happy that companies still make good movies with clean language and stuff
I'd like to see that movie. Growing up with Lego sets, I never was a fan of Ninjago, but the film looks entertaining.
Idk the LEGO Batman movie looked good
Also I like Batman movies just not Marvel most of the time
Ok this is gonna sound weird but the Lego bat man movie wasn't a superhero movie by which I mean not primarily action based
I know you don't like the marvel movies and that's mostly what it felt like- they even had a ringtone playing the tv show theme song which is a classic superhero trope
It's an adventure movie. Batman is cool, then we realize he has character struggles and things fall apart, then plot develops and characters interact, Batman hits the bottom, has a revelation, and succeeds. It's a pretty typical family movie structure. They actually do quite a bit to make fun of superhero movies (unsurprisingly).
Zunawe actually knows everything
I didn't know that.
Mind explodes
I watched Thor yesterday and man was that a good movie. Literally I think it topped Gaurdians of the Galazy Vol. 2. I won't give any spoilers though so don't worry, just trust me when I say this movie is worth watching. Great Characters, Great Jokes, and Great Cameos
Soooooooo
new Star Wars was pretty dang great
that's all I'll say
Yeah. Mind-blowing. I was shaking for an hour or so after the film. Favorite SW movie probably
yeah it's pretty cool
For those who have seen The Last Jedi only
Dangit, I thought about watching this movie... I just wanted to Google a question

Erm...try that link again.
It was eh. The rest focusing on Rey ranged from decent to excellent. The parts focusing on the duo ranged from mediocre to insultingly bad. I enjoyed it, yes. It just wasn't really that high quality. It showed no real innovation and had no large twists, both of which the original trilogy was known for. It just felt really derivative, not unlike most Marvel movies.
Any interest in a movie night sometime?
