Avatar Size Limit?

What's the size limit for image files that I want to use as an avatar? The reason I ask is because I just started this big, stupid, amazing project where I pretty much condense the entirety of Metal Gear Solid 3 into an avatar sized gif.

Here's a quick sample:

I think I can manage 1:18 without exceeding 10MB (the above is 0:24 and 3MB), but I'm worried even that might be too much. I really need to know when I can stop.

There isn't any specified limit. However, common sense still applies. If you're talking about megabytes, you've most likely crossed the limit. I mean, my avatar is 29 kilobytes, for example. You need to consider that your avatar gets loaded by everyone who reads a page with your post in it. Not everyone has a fast internet connection and a massive avatar can slow down their forum browsing considerably. Use either a static image or a short gif, long gifs belong somewhere else.

Point taken, but I'm still making this thing. I'll just have to figure out something else to do with it if it ends up being as bad as you say.

If you wanted to, you could just cut it up in to lots of little tidbits and use http://www.random-image.net/ to play a random one each time someone views your avatar.

Noted. I'll keep that link saved.

You'd be better off just linking to gfycat in that case since html5 video embeds don't seem like they'll be working on the forum anytime soon.  Large gifs will slow down a browser considerably every time they try to load :x
