It poops up a code that may or may not work. Like if I wanted to get the full version of Finale PrintMusic I would get a keygen to get fake/real authorization codes to access the full version from the demo.

Yes, they are illegal. If you do actually get one from some pirating site, scan it with virus sweeper first. *glares at akiro* But you probably shouldn't.
