...huh. I'll bet you thought I was talking about the defile that dealt with purity (or lack thereof!) :P
I didn't realize defile had another meaning!

I just googled it; although spelled and pronounced the same, the two words have completely different etymologies. The defile which means "to make impure" comes from the Old English "defoul." The defile which means "to march in single file" comes from the French "dé" (away from), and "file" (column or file).
