Here are the answers to my latest quiz:

~~~~~Main Section~~~~~
#1
"You Will Know Our Names"(/"Those Who Bear Their Name"), from Xenoblade Chronicles, used as the "unique monster" battle theme
Timestamp: 1:22
This is one of the most famous songs in this quiz...I think. I picked a slightly obscure section for it (the strong cadence), but I didn't expect anyone to be fooled.
Unfortunately, it seems that people were actually fooled:
Quote from: ThatHiddenCharacter on July 12, 2017, 02:18:14 PM#1 Sounds familiar, but not enough to base anything off of.
Quote from: ThatHiddenCharacter on July 12, 2017, 03:23:21 PM#1 I still have no idea, but it sounds sooo familiar.
I'm surprised Dudeman didn't even bother to guess this song.
"Exotic Pyramid", from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, used as the Raisin Ruins 3 level theme
Timestamp: 0:30
I actually first learned this song from a Japanese Kirby medley, of all things. Then I found more remixes of it, and then I figured that it wasn't too obscure for this quiz.
Any resemblance this melody has to any other video game themes you're familiar with is probably unintentional...I blame this song being in A minor and having somewhat Egyptian melodies.
This is one of my favourite Mega Man themes. It's one of the few that I remember. I actually have a pretty bad track record with Mega Man themes--they almost never seem quite memorable enough. Thank goodness this is an exception.
Timestamp: 0:00
I thought this would be one of the few VGM themes that people can recognize from just one bar. In this theme's case, it would be the first bar, which both introduces and ends a loop convincingly enough.
...Turns out I was right enough.
"The World Could Always Use More Heroes", from Overwatch, used in the opening cinematic and the main menu
Timestamp: 0:17
It's the most famous song in...Overwatch. Well, that just might cut into its popularity around these parts.
I also accepted "...And Overwatch For All" as a correct answer, along with every other Overwatch song with this precise melody in it.
Heck, this melody appears so many times in Overwatch that I accepted this:
Quote from: Yug_Guy on July 14, 2017, 07:39:44 PM6. Main Theme - Overwatch
But, sadly, I did not accept this, as that song does not contain this precise melody (it contains, like, 2 bars of it at most):
"Multiplayer Battle"/"Battling", from Bomberman (DS), used as multiplayer battle background music
Timestamp: 0:01
Here I was, wondering why I wasn't encountering Bomberman songs in these quizzes...so I stuck this melody in my latest quiz and wondered which Bomberman games you'd mention in guesses for this.
So I actually ended up accepting darn near any song in this video. Yes, counting every single melodic variant in there.
...Turns out I didn't need an accepted list that large, though, as nobody even made a guess for this song. Did none of you ever play a Bomberman game in multiplayer mode with the sound on?
Maybe that's why I haven't been seeing Bomberman songs in these quizzes...
"Meta Knight's Revenge", from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, used as a stage theme
Timestamp: 1:33
This is one of the few songs I remember from playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl (before listening to its soundtrack), and it's one of the 2-3 songs that got me into Kirby music in the first place. My biggest pet peeve is that this remix skips an entire section of its 2nd source VGM theme, "Taking Over the Halberd"...and this melody skips that section, too, which is why I marked that source theme as wrong.
...OK, I marked it half-wrong. I gave a "you were close, but find the remix with this precise melody" hint to everyone who guessed the source theme, and the hint got more revealing the closer to deadline it was (i.e. I started to reveal that the remix is not in a Kirby game). Due to deadline constraints among people who guessed the source theme, I gave 0.5 marks to everyone remaining who guessed it by the time of this post.
I figured at least one of you would have at least a ghost of chance of getting this song--the one who mentioned he listened to marasy8. (There is a marasy8 piano transcription of this song.) Unfortunately, he didn't even make a guess for this song.
Quote from: Olimar12345 on July 14, 2017, 09:19:21 PMtldr any pikmin or should I go back to what I was doing?
There are no Pikmin melodies in my current quiz.
Speaking of that, maybe I will go with some last-minute hints:
  • If you aren't sure about a melody, PM me your remarks about it anyway. I'll PM you back about whether you're on the right track.
  • The more obscure the song, the more lax my marking is.
  • #1, #4, #5, #8, #15, #17, #2f, and #3f have transcriptions on NinSheetMusic. In addition, #10 and #13 are from remixes of songs with transcriptions on NinSheetMusic. I make no guarantees about the accuracy of those transcriptions.
  • #1 and #17 are supposed to be easy. I'm surprised how many people aren't getting #1 right so far.
  • Unlike some of my previous quizzes, there are NO Pokemon songs, NO Shovel Knight songs, and NO Touhou songs in this quiz.
  • Just like all of my previous quizzes, there are NO Zelda songs in this quiz.
  • The only series with more than one song in this quiz are Mario, Kirby, and arguably Super Smash Bros. None of the other songs share a series.
  • There is one Mega Man song and one Sonic song in this quiz.
It's been more than 24 hours, and only 3 people have submitted guesses so far. In case you've forgotten, here's my latest Guess-The-Song Quiz:
Quote from: Dekkadeci on July 12, 2017, 09:06:30 AMHere's my fourth Guess-The-Song Quiz:
[PDF] | [MIDI] | [MUS] | [MSCZ]
The MUS is readable in Finale, including Finale Notepad. The MSCZ is readable in Musescore. All other files are based on the original MSCZ, not the MUS--this explains why the PDF doesn't look like the MUS.
The MUS may display and/or play back bugged. The MSCZ, MIDI, and PDF shouldn't.
Surprise--I've included exactly 5 final boss themes in this quiz, and they're all in a bonus section! All final boss themes are labelled #1f through #5f. I will reveal separate tallies for the main section, the final boss bonus section, and both sections combined when I post the results.
With that being said, the rest of the songs are from a wide array of series, and they're likely more difficult overall than my third quiz...although I did throw in some much easier ones, I believe. Don't worry if you know only one song--you might be the only one to get it right!
You can PM answers to me until Saturday, July 15 at 1:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Saturday, July 15 8:00 PM forum default time). I will not count any submissions made after that time, as I'll be too busy tallying results.
Results will be posted shortly afterwards.
Some guidelines for answering, how the melodies are transcribed, and what counts as a correct answer:
  • You may submit YouTube links/videos instead of game name-song name/best known use pairs.
  • All tempos are approximate.
  • Like last time, I will mark unambiguous songs with the right melody in the right key as correct. If your guess has the right melody in the wrong key, I will mark it as incorrect but PM back that you were close. You can freely guess again until the deadline.
  • I may not have gotten octave voicings correct in this quiz. If you think you've got the right song but it's off by an octave or two in parts, just guess that song anyway.
  • The high F note in the fourth bar of #1, #6, #15, the third bar of #3f, and #4f are less likely to be completely melodically and/or rhythmically accurate than the rest of the melodies.
  • You are still expected to submit game name-song name/best known use pairs or YouTube links/videos for the final boss bonus section. Hint 1: Giving game names alone for the bonus section results in ambiguous answers. Hint 2: At least one final boss in this section has at least two stages.
  • The last note of #6 is cut off.
  • The last bar of #1 is incompletely transcribed.
  • Due to the nature of their source songs, I am more likely to accept melodic variants of #7 and #17 as correct. Get the keys right, though.
Kirby's Blowout Blast spoilers below, although there are reasons why I've ended up not posting them for so long...
Spoiler
  • This game resembles Kirby's Dream Land and therefore the "Spring Breeze" sub-game of Kirby Super Star a LOT.
  • Like those two (sub-)games above, Kirby has no copy abilities, enough of the bosses come back, enough of the old school enemies come back...
  • Even worse, you fight some bosses multiple times (a la Kirby and the Rainbow Curse)!
  • IMO, it's bad news that one of the most innovative features in the closest this game has to a plot is (Giant) Masked Dedede coming back.
  • Even the music comes back--tons of this game's OST is remixed from the OST of Kirby's Dream Land. The Giant Masked Dedede theme combines the Masked Dedede theme and the Team Kirby Clash Deluxe version of the Castle Lololo/Dyna Blade theme.
  • In case you couldn't tell, Giant Masked Dedede is (the last stage of) the true final boss. Man, am I having Kirby's Dream Land flashbacks in a bad way...
  • Well, at least some songs from later than the very first Kirby game show up, too...at least when you place Amiibos nearby...
