I picked Turtwig my first time, but I think Piplup is the best. Chimchar's also good, but its design gets progressively more unattractive as it evolves (which is a trait that applies to every single Fire starter in my eyes).

Completely agree about the Fire starters. It's especially bad with Tepig and Litten though.
