I think it's fine if you tell them exactly what you're changing. I think just going "here I fixed some things for ya" should be against the rules though. Not only does it not help the person, it makes it impossible for the updaters to know how it was changed from the original and if those changes are correct.

I agree. First, you ask the person if you can edit their file (I usually do this via pms) then you give a detailed description of what you fixed/changed.
