Quiz 152 answers will be posted tonight at midnight EST.

Here is our fifty-melody-long:
Guess-That-Soundbyte Midterm 154!

[Dropbox folder]

[Google Form]

This one was essentially procedurally generated by hand if that makes any sense at all. My methodology is in the spoiler below, but otherwise all you really need to know is that:
1. Each "series" according to NSM is used exactly once and there are 7 "Other" tracks.
2. The tracks are ordered by a vague conception of sales numbers. (More details in the spoiler.)

Methodology
For all randomness, I used Random.org. For each series, one game was chosen from all games with at least sheet on site with equal probability. Then I went to Khinsider (or YouTube if Khinsider didn't have it) and chose a track at random. Finally, I choose a timestamp at random and cropped it. I vetoed if (1) the soundbyte wasn't representative of the track or if (2) the track wasn't representative of the soundtrack. The games are ordered by "sales numbers" even though the results weren't all that reliable. If a game didn't have those published, I took the sales numbers for the series/mini-series and divided it by the number of games. If there weren't even series numbers, I put it at the bottom of the list.

Hopefully this methodology didn't yield a terrible quiz. It's made kind of obvious that making, for example, "Mario & Wario" and "Super Mario Odyssey" equally likely led to some weird results. In creating the quiz after this one, I used the Huntington-Hill method (the method the US government uses to apportion seats in the House of Representatives according to census populations) to apportion the number of melodies according to number of games on site.

Anyways, lol, have fun with this one. Since this one is longer and has more steps, this one should end a month from now on 12/29 at a time TBD.

Wow, that was real close for a bit. Here are the results:

By melody
Dude.. have I really got to make a spoiler for every single melody? Rip. And also, all the links I originally used are dead since BrawlBRSTMs3 X died too. Rip again.

By guesser
These are the submissions in chronological order:
A ‘+’ denotes that that guesser submitted another guess later.
[close]

Congratulations, mastersuperfan! Impressive that you got all of them except for #13 (and probably would’ve gotten that one too if it came down to it).

I first wrote out all the numbers everyone got, but I decided that was bland and was mostly meaningless. Instead, I made a little chart like this. Anyways, these guessers guessed these melodies:
A ‘0’ denotes missing the melody and a ‘1’ denotes guessing correctly.
[close]

Seems like Mario Kart is very well known. All but one of the guessers who got 5+ melodies right got all 5 Mario Kart melodies right. And sorry, Mario Party. You’re the real loser of this melody quiz unfortunately.
[close]

All other Melody Quizzers, I recommend you use Google Forms since that made that so much easier for me. Ultimately, you do you. Watching the results come in was fun too. IIrc, this quiz had more guessers than any other quiz I’ve ever done, so cool beans. Too bad, [second place winner], better luck next time.

IT'S BLUEKIRBY'S MELODY QUIZ 2, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

This time, with 100% less Len'en*! And also an "Extra" difficulty?? *gasp*

Difficulties are same as last time plus Extra

Easy is well-known songs

Normal is either popular songs from weird games or just decently known songs

Hard is lesser known, but not downright obscure games or melodies late into songs

Lunatic is lesser known tracks from lesser known games, melodies late into songs, that kinda stuff. Also, no, #16 isn't from Touhou/Len'en. I mentioned it somewhere else, so it'd be fair to let everyone know.

Extra is a bit different. I plan to start experimenting with Extra difficulty in the future, but basically it'll be a set of songs that follow one specific theme and aren't counted as part of the score, but just a little bonus. This time the theme is: "Fangames/Fanmods". For the purpose of this theme, games heavily inspired by a particular series or multiple series, but not connected to, aren't counted as fangames (Len'en, Undertale, etc.), but fangames of those count. Also this was entirely for #25, which I guarantee no one will get, but that's fine because I only put it in for self-indulgence reasons.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.

I'm also including a Micro-Quiz, consisting of 5 basslines! It'll be scored separately and is completely optional, so don't feel pressured to answer it!

again, .mus is poorly formatted and meant for listening. dm thru either here or discord. time will be at least 1 week, potentially more, depending on how lazy i am i feel.

And here's one hint: Excluding the Extra difficulty, only 1 series has more than one song, and that series is Kirby. Why? because i like kirby. Don't despair, however, as I still tried to get a decent variety of games! And you can ask for hints as well, don't worry!

Surprise everyone

Here's another quiz

Guess-That-Melody Quiz: MSF Round 29

For your convenience, I have sorted this quiz into three difficulty levels:
  • EASY (#1-10): Also known as the Insig difficulty. Either iconic tracks or tracks from popular games. I hope this section is pretty straightforward.
  • NORMAL (#11-20): Also known as the Latios difficulty. Not quite as well known as the Easy section, but hopefully fairly accessible to the NSM population.
  • HARD (#21-30): Also known as the Maelstrom difficulty. This is where tracks become trickier or more niche. I expect people to vary considerably in which melodies they do and don't get here.
  • MADDENING: Also known as the Static difficulty. I didn't do one this time because it probably would have been a waste of everyone's time.

Answers will probably be posted in a week-ish, maybe. Now go wild.
Logged
there's also a huge difference in quality between 2000 songs and 2010 songs
The difference between 2000 songs and 2010 songs is 10 songs.

#1 (20/21)
"Startup" – [GCN] Nintendo GameCube BIOS

I don't really know what the time signature of this should be, but listening to it makes it obvious enough regardless. This was a free point for almost everyone.

"Title Theme" – [GB] Kirby's Dream Land

Timestamp: 0:07

This one actually bamboozled some people because it just sounds like very generic Kirby, and it was hard to pin down where exactly it was from. I also didn't realize that the first measure of this melody is also in Greens Greens, which may have confused people.

"Dialga's Fight to the Finish" – [NDS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness

Timestamp: 0:45
YouTube Link

If there's any PMD track I can expected non-PMD fans to recognize, it's this one—partly because of Bespinben's infamous arrangements. This would never have gone into the Easy section except for the fact that this is NinSheetMusic, where everyone and their mother loves PMD.

So I thought this was iconic and thus would be easily recognizable, but it turns out that a lot of people actually don't know that this part of the theme exists. Whoops.

Also recognizable from the Mega Man 2 medley in Smash 4.

it sounds familiar

#8 (12/21)
"Bad Apple" – [PC-98] Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story

Timestamp: 0:20
YouTube Link

This is probably the most famous Touhou track in existence (mainly in the form of this vocal remix), arguably even moreso than "U.N. Owen was her?". WaluigiTime64 actually used this track once before, but it was an obscure part that nobody knows, so this time, I decided to pick the part that people could actually get.

By the way, this metal cover with English lyrics by RichaadEB and Cristina Vee is one of greatest pieces of music I've ever heard. I highly suggest you take a listen if you have a few minutes to spare.

"View" – [GCN] Pikmin

Timestamp: 0:48

AKA the World Map theme. As with many other tracks on this quiz, this one is well known from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The track title in Brawl, "World Map (Pikmin 2)", is actually wrong because this is from Pikmin 1, not Pikmin 2, but I accepted it anyway because I was generous. You're welcome.

"Here We Are" – [PC] Undertale

Timestamp: 1:28

This is probably one of the few Undertale tracks that's obscure enough to warrant being put in the Normal section instead of the Easy section. Also, it's in 5/4 time, which is neat.

I don't actually remember this part of the game very well, but it seems like others do. Probably because I played Genocide at least seven times and Pacifist only once...

"Boss Battle" – [NDS] Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Timestamp: 0:14
YouTube Link

#14 back at it again with a generic battle theme from a Mario RPG whose popularity I seem to have overestimated.

I picked this track because I'm pretty sure it plays, like, at least five times more than any other track in the game, so if there was any track you'd remember, it'd be this one. Unfortunately, I guess not a lot of people have played it compared to Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story, which makes me a little sad because this game was my childhood. But oh well.

Quote

"Happy People" / "Congratulations, Everyone" – [NDS] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Timestamp: 0:15

*cue a woman with an afro yelling at you in a Southern accent*

I don't know why there are two completely different names for this title, but I accepted either one. This is a track that I think people probably wouldn't listen to often outside of the game, but is still memorable enough that people would remember it from the game itself.

With the number of quiz participants who have played at least the first Ace Attorney game, I thought this would be well known enough to warrant being placed in Normal instead of Hard, but it seems I was wrong. I'm glad that at least a few people got it, though.

God-Shattering Star was supposed to go here, but BlueKirby used that in her last quiz, so I picked the next best thing as a replacement. I could have been nice and given the beginning part, but I was mean and transcribed the section very far into the track. Either way, fewer people got this track than I expected.

This was in Smash 4 and also got a remix in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well.

So this is the second and probably last time I use a track from TWEWY. This is one of the most famous tracks from the game, so I was hoping for at least one person to come through here.

Here's my next quiz!

The NSM Sometimely Guess-That-Melody Quiz! (Latios Edition #7)

This quiz is not sorted in any order. Most of these are intended to be moderate in difficulty. One piece of info - no more than two melodies for any one series. Have at it! :)

Here are the results for my quiz! Thanks to everyone who participated! :D

#1 (5/16)
"Cave Dungeon" – [N64] Super Mario 64, also known as "Hazy Maze Cave"

Timestamp: 1:00
YouTube Link

This one's a bit tricky - the sheet on site uses cut time for this, and some may consider it more of a countermelody than a melody. I thought it was fair though, since it's clear, unobstructed, and memorable. Enough people got this one :P

#2 (3/16)
"Beneath the Surface" – [SWITCH] Octopath Traveler

Timestamp: 0:38 (also played by other instruments throughout the piece)
YouTube Link

The best dungeon theme in the game :P the way the different instruments play this melody is suuuper pretty (and it's rhythmically interesting too).

2: Beneath the Surface - Octopath (aka best dungeon theme in the game)

#3 (4/16)
"Ezio's Family" – [MUL] Assassin's Creed II

Timestamp: literally the entire thing

This is apparently a really popular song, but largely outside the realm of what people are familiar with at NSM, so I was curious how this one would do...

#5 (4/16)
"Smashing Song of Praise" – [GBA] Mother 3

Timestamp: 1:02
YouTube Link (also appears in “Unfounded Revenge / Smashing Song of Praise” from Super Smarh Bros. Brawl)

This piece has some rather abrupt mood swings, and this is one of the calmer parts. While short, this excerpt’s turns are super distinctive.

#6 (5/16)
"Peaceful Place" – [Wii] Kirby’s Return to Dream Land

Timestamp: 0:00

This one’s super distinctive, and most who got this one recognized it instantly from RtDL. Unfortunately it seems there isn’t a widely used naming system for its soundtrack...

#7 (8/16)
"Title Theme" – [N64] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Timestamp: 0:43
YouTube Link

Every Nintendo fan is legally required to know this theme, so everyone who didn’t get this one will be banned immediately (though the slowness of this section makes it a bit tougher than the main high melody, so it’s understandable to miss)

Quote from: Dudeman
#7: Title - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (lol I got it just from the first three notes)

#8 (7/16)
"A Trainer Appears (Girl Version)" – [GB] Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version

Timestamp: 0:01
YouTube Link (also appears in "Trainers' Eyes Meet (Girl 2)" from Pokémon Gold Version & Pokémon Silver Version)

This should sound familiar to anyone who’s played Gen 1, Gen 2, or their remakes :P

#9 (2/16)
"Mystifying Forest" – [NDS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness

Timestamp: 0:45
YouTube Link

Much of this song is similar in style, so even though it’s the end of the loop it’d probably sound familiar if you’ve played through the post-game before. I think this one was roughly the hardest one I put on the quiz.

Quote from: mastersuperfan
I feel like it should be somewhat easy to pin down as "sounds like something from PMD2 somewhere maybe"
for those who have played the game
Quote from: mastersuperfan

#10 (2/16)
"Choose Your Pipe" – [GB] Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, also known as "File Select"

Timestamp: 0:19
YouTube Link

I did not expect this one to be the one with the least correct guesses. Though I guess there’s not much reason to stay on the file select screen until this part plays…

Radiak was painfully close (yet not close) when the pipe room from Super Mario GALAXY 2 came to mind...

  • mastersuperfan
  • Yug Guy
[close]

#11 (4/16)
"Flower Fields" – [Wii] Kirby's Epic Yarn

Timestamp: 0:38
YouTube Link

This one... I had no idea how it would go because this section is not very distinctive when you strip it down to its melody, even though it’s quite a widely known track. In the end, I was surprised more people didn’t get this one :P

  • mastersuperfan

#12 (8/16)
"Shop" – [GB] The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, also known as some other stuff.

Timestamp: 0:00
YouTube Link

This one’s probably the most distinctive melody on the quiz, with its tipsy chromatics. Though I’m not sure if I’d have even remembered where it came from if I took my own quiz. A bunch of people got this one :P

  • mastersuperfan
  • Radiak488417

#13 (5/16)
"Tearing Through Heaven (Rain)" – [SWITCH] Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Timestamp: 1:52

The best part of the best (non-final boss) battle theme from the game!

Guessed by:
  • mastersuperfan
  • Dudeman
  • Maelstrom
  • Kaphita
  • SlimyWyvern

#14 (2/16)
"Lockstep" – [NDS] Rhythm Heaven

Timestamp: 0:29
YouTube Link

One of my favorite Rhythm Heaven tracks. The melody, especially in this section, really takes the front seat contrary to many other minigames where a rhythmic figure stands out more than the melody itself.

Decided to end with something straightforward. Not too surprisingly, this is the one that the most people got.

The NSM Guess-That-Melody Quiz! - Levi's 3rd Quiz
« Reply #2169 on: January 14, 2021, 04:59:48 AM »

After a four year hiatus following his last quiz that drove everyone bonkers...

...he's back, baby! The creator of...

The NSM NotUntilLately Guess-That-Melody Quiz!

Yes, I've returned after a sudden urge of motivation (pressed by lack of motivation to practice my sax,) and made a brand new quiz with fifteen melodies! This time around, I've got a reformed sense of judgement. That means no:

- Satellaview music
- Mega Man Game Boy music

-- nor any music I know that no one but me would recognize!

This time, I've used music from games I've never even played, to make sure everyone gets a chance to hear something they know. The first twelve melodies are at a normal difficulty, and the last three are especially obscure, but still notable in some sense. We'll just have to see how well you all do!

Here's Quiz #3!

1.13.21 Melody Quiz.zip

Have fun playing! I'll post the answers once I feel enough people have played.

(Will you accept this quiz as an apology, Dudeman?)
