Help! / Music Theory Resources
« on: June 12, 2015, 01:02:16 AM »
I realized I'm sticking around NSM probably forever so I figured I'd better start learning some music theory to help with my own arranging and understanding and providing feedback on other people's arrangements.

So my question is: how do I learn music theory on my own? I need a reliable source I can spend some of my free time on.

Also, preferably a book, because I need to read in bed or something without staring at a screen, but whatever works really.

Feel free to ask me to elaborate more on what I want but the main things I don't know about right now are chords/accidentals/keys/modes.

Forum Games / Pokémon Super Personality Test!

Pokémon Super Personality Test!
This topic will be run similarly to ZeldaFan's Questions topic in that every day or two I will ask a question and you will respond. At the end of the quiz (length TBD) I will reveal what Pokémon you are! Feel free to choose it as your hero in Super PMD or whatever you want. :D

For now, though, please post if you are interested in playing, as I would like to know who will participate, since the quiz works best when you answer many questions. I'll have this up and running as soon as I can!

As you all should know, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon has been announced. And it seems to again lack a personality quiz that some people (myself included) miss. So I figured, why not make my own? :)

It's probably been a while since you took one (if ever)! So whether you've played PMD or not, I invite you to take part in my own personality quiz for the fun of it! My methodology will work similarly to the personality quizzes in the first two games, in that I will ask you questions and the answers you provide will award you points to a certain nature, and at the end of the quiz the nature with the most points will be matched up to a starter Pokémon. Of course, the answer attributes and Pokémon nature list will be secret.

Question list

Question 1 - Do you sing in the shower?
A - Yes
B - No
C - ...

Question 2 - You're invited to a party, but didn't get the memo for the dress theme! How do you dress?
A - Casual
B - Formal
C - Pokémon onesie

Question 3 - Do you ever accidentally doze off? (ex. in class, while reading/watching a movie, etc.)
A - Yes
B - No

Question 4 - It's your birthday! How do you celebrate?
B - Spend some time chilling with a few friends/family members.
C - Don't tell anyone...

Question 5 - When are you most productive?
A - Morning
B - Afternoon
C - Night
D - Past midnight

Question 6 - Do you feel stressed out a lot?
A - All the time.
B - Sometimes.
C - Only when absolutely necessary!

Question 7 - Do you tend to plan things out in advance?
A - Yes, I have my entire week planned out already.
B - Only if someone invites me.
C - Nope.

Question 8 - You just got a new game from your favorite series! What do you do?
A - Drop everything and play nonstop until you complete it.
B - Just play for a little while each day.

Creativity Corner / The REAL NSM Weekly
« on: May 05, 2015, 12:34:47 AM »
Welcome back to NSM Weekly!

This topic is just for the official newsletter only, as per popular request. Discussion (and everything else) should happen here.

Dear all,

NSM Weekly is a weekly (or rather, whenever we feel like updating it) experimental publication in which we recap things that happen during each week. In theory, we’ll have different sections written by different members and assembled to make a kind-of-coherent newsletter, but, you know, getting people to do things is HARD. Please post here or PM me with any ideas you have or things that you would like to contribute. I’m the captain now. :)

(Why did I make a new topic? Well, I need to be able to update the OP with links, news, and things.  I’ll also move over the mess of news fragments from before onto here, so as to be better organized.)

Help! / Octave Clefs?
« on: April 24, 2015, 05:51:25 AM »
When browsing sheets around here, I occasionally stumble upon some octave clefs. Usually the octave bass clef, this one right here:

I was wondering when octave clefs should or shouldn't be used, as opposed to using 8va/vb.

While I see them in some sheets that need to be replaced anyway (see this one) I've also seen them in recent arrangements (like this). Also, I noticed this one from a while back has been revised to not include octave clefs.

But the point is, when are these okay to use? I've heard that some people frown upon them, and I do as well because sometimes I don't notice it while reading a sheet and I think 8va/vb makes it clearer. What do you guys think about these?

Fulfilled requests / [MUL] Kirby - "Dream a New Dream for Tomorrow"
« on: April 21, 2015, 03:42:25 AM »
Completed by JesterMusician

This was included in the Kirby's Dream Collection Soundtrack but never found in game. They took parts from a few old Kirby songs and remixed them into a new, relaxing track. (As opposed to how hyper many Kirby songs are.)

I've been meaning to do this one for a little while, but I'm aware that it's a bit beyond my level for now. If someone could help me out with this one, that'd be great!

Other Performance Videos / Latios212's YouTube Channel
« on: February 16, 2015, 10:55:15 PM »
So I made a YouTube channel. Over time I might put my arrangements or piano covers of NSM sheets on here.

Here's my first video, a piano cover of "The Lament of Falling Stars" from Pokémon Ωr/αs. Much thanks for InsigTurtle for arranging it and Bespinben for making the sheet more readable!

Help! / The Arranging Process
« on: February 15, 2015, 01:55:05 AM »
After reading lots of posts from Bespinben and others, I just have a few questions for the experienced arrangers around here, regarding the arranging process and things like that:

Do you always transcribe everything entirely by ear?
How do you feel about MIDIs taken from games and particularly other sites/people on YouTube who arrange VGM too? They're usually not as good as the ones here but do you ever draw inspiration from them? I see people allude to them now and then but do they ever affect your work?
How much freedom do you have when arranging? That is, the amount of creativity/rearrangement present in your arrangements as opposed to matching the original note for note.

I'm just curious because I'm still pretty new at this and want to know what factors go into making an arrangement. Thanks!

Latios212's Arrangements

Hi, welcome to my arrangements page! Here you can find all my video game piano arrangements.

A few notes:
- I upload a new sheet about once a week!
- Green links indicate that the sheet is on site. Blue links indicate sheets that may need some polishing before I submit them to the site, but they're there for your viewing pleasure anyway; do feel free to give feedback! (Some sheets marked in blue may not have PDF or MIDI files generated yet; feel free to ask for them.)
- : A Poké Ball links you to the related video on my YouTube channel (mostly sheet music videos, some piano covers).
- : A Great Ball links you to a related video on someone else's YouTube channel (mostly piano covers).
