Well the problem is that the first few episodes have moments that are exactly like what you mention. You kinda need to see the whole series before you start to appreciate it, which is quite a bit of digging to find the good stuff. On the other hand, I don't know anyone who's watched the whole thing and didn't like it at least a little bit.
